Infected? DVD Burner Drive Change, etc.

Hello Tech Support Forum Staff,

I’ve recently had some funky stuff happening on my computer. I used a XP windows restore to get back the computer back functional, but I still believe I either have a virus or some other form of malware on my system due to some lingering problems (either that or something really funky has occurred).

Problems that occurred that made computer virtually unfunctional:

1. General Slowdown in tasks/significantly longer boot time/some times it wouldn’t boot at all.

2. While trying to clean temporary internet files (manually), window would scroll up and down very rapidly. Was able to clean them using a right click and select all, but clicking individually nearly impossible.

3. When opening any forms where any text could by typed (ie: Word Document, all fields in IE and Firefox windows), 7’s would flood the screen making it virtually impossible to type anything. When arrowing back or selecting a group of text in a field, it deleted whatever was in the way.

4. Clicking Internet Explorer or any icon on desktop prompted for the removal of that icon. Choosing “No” would result in the screen popping up again immediately.

5. Problem allowed me to see the files on cd’s and dvd’s in my drives, but it changed the name of my DVD/CD burner to “CD-ROM” when entering a blank DVD. It would not allow for any files to be burnt on drive, nor would it actually allow any files any either drive to be opened.

6. Funny high pitch buzzing sound coming from the machine during loading or trying to access something in cd or dvd-rom drives.

Currently, I am still unable to access my DVD Burner to actually burn anything. It is still changing it to viewing it as a regular CD-rom drive when I put a blank dvd+r in it.

I’m running Windows XP SP2. I’ve been running SP2 since near its release and have not had any problems with it yet. I’m running Norton AntiVirus and Internet Protection. I did not download any programs within the past week before incurring problem (nor did I knowingly opened any attachments). I have no idea what invaded my system, how it got there, or if it is still on here in a milder form in my registry or something. I’d like to try to make sure it’s gone; and if it is, I’d like to get my drives to start reading stuff correctly. If this is the wrong forum for this post, I apologize. I’m not exactly sure what caused these problems. If any more information would help on the problem, I will try my best to provide it.

I cant see any malware that could be causing your problem.To me with those high pitched sounds, it all points to a hard drive/ CD-ROM problem.Can you post a full log as your running processes are missing.

The thing about the sound is that it was only apparent during loading while I was still have the major problems. I haven't heard the sound since. That also doesn't seem to explain the rest of my problems (which were onset at the same time as the drive problems). My regular DVD rom drive seems normal at this time now also. I just put a DVD in my burner drive.... it's playing a regular dvd fine, while it calls itself "CD Drive" when I put in a blank DVD. Furthermore, I get a "cannot copy XXX" when trying to que any file or folder to be burnt.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should not have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that 'Display the contents of system folders' is checked. Windows XP's search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that Search system folders, Search hidden files and folders, and Search subfolders are checked.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

Reboot into Safe Mode (hit F8 key until menu shows up). Make sure to close any open browsers. Go into HijackThis->Config->Misc. Tools->Open process manager. Select the following and click Kill process for each one if they are still listed (they shouldn't be - but double check it):

C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr.exe

Uninstall the following via the Add/Remove Panel (Start->(Settings)->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs) if they exist:

Viewpoint or Viewpoint Manager

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

Delete the following Files/Folders (delete folders if no filename is specified) according to their directory (if none, just do a search for them) and delete them if they exist:

Reboot into Normal Mode and run new HijackThis scan. If there were some entries that didn't show up in Safe Mode, you may check and fix those that appear now in normal mode (if you do that, make sure to run a new scan again). Save the log file and run KRC HijackThis Analyzer in the same folder to get the result.txt log. Just post the contents of the result.txt file in the forum.

I followed your instructions, but there were two things that I feel should mention. First, the keyboard was non-functional in safe mode. Secondly, I could not find the Viewpoint folder after I removed the program (although I suspect this is how it's supposed to be). And yes, all the show file options were selected.

DVD Burner Drive Change, etc. Hello Tech Support Forum Staff, I’ve recently had some funky stuff happening on my computer. I used a XP windows restore to get back the computer back functional, but I still believe I either have a virus or some other form of malware on my system due to some lingering problems (either that or something really funky has occurred). Problems that occurred that made computer virtually unfunctional: 1. General Slowdown in tasks/significantly longer boot time/some times it wouldn’t boot at all. 2. While trying to clean temporary internet files (manually), window would scroll up and down very rapidly. Was able to clean them using a right click and select all, but clicking individually nearly impossible. 3. When opening any forms where any text could by typed (ie: Word Document, all fields in IE and Firefox windows), 7’s would flood the screen making it virtually impossible to type anything. When arrowing back or selecting a group of text in a field, it deleted whatever was in the way. 4. Clicking Internet Explorer or any icon on desktop prompted for the removal of that icon. Choosing “No” would result in the screen popping up again immediately. 5. Problem allowed me to see the files on cd’s and dvd’s in my drives, but it changed the name of my DVD/CD burner to “CD-ROM” when entering a blank DVD. It would not allow for any files to be burnt on drive, nor would it actually allow any files any either drive to be opened. 6. Funny high pitch buzzing sound coming from the machine during loading or trying to access something in cd or dvd-rom drives. Currently, I am still unable to access my DVD Burner to actually burn anything. It is still changing it to viewing it as a regular CD-rom drive when I put a blank dvd+r in it. I’m running Windows XP SP2. I’ve been running SP2 since near its release and have not had any problems with it yet. I’m running Norton AntiVirus and Internet Protection. I did not download any programs within the past week before incurring problem (nor did I knowingly opened any attachments). I have no idea what invaded my system, how it got there, or if it is still on here in a milder form in my registry or something. I’d like to try to make sure it’s gone; and if it is, I’d like to get my drives to start reading stuff correctly. If this is the wrong forum for this post, I apologize. Log The thing about the sound is that it was only apparent during loading while I was still have the major problems. I haven't heard the sound since. That also doesn't seem to explain the rest of my problems (which were onset at the same time as the drive problems). My regular DVD rom drive seems normal at this time now also. I just put a DVD in my burner drive.... it's playing a regular dvd fine, while it calls itself "CD Drive" when I put in a blank DVD. Furthermore, I get a "cannot copy XXX" when trying to que any file or folder to be burnt. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should not have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below. Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that 'Display the contents of system folders' is checked. Windows XP's search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that Search system folders, Search hidden files and folders, and Search subfolders are checked. For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep). Reboot into Safe Mode (hit F8 key until menu shows up). Make sure to close any open browsers. Go into HijackThis->Config->Misc. Tools->Open process manager. Select the following and click Kill process for each one if they are still listed (they shouldn't be - but double check it): C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr.exe Uninstall the following via the Add/Remove Panel (Start->(Settings)->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs) if they exist: Viewpoint or Viewpoint Manager Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any): O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ViewMgr] C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr.exe Delete the following Files/Folders (delete folders if no filename is specified) according to their directory (if none, just do a search for them) and delete them if they exist: C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\ Reboot into Normal Mode and run new HijackThis scan. If there were some entries that didn't show up in Safe Mode, you may check and fix those that appear now in normal mode (if you do that, make sure to run a new scan again). First, the keyboard was non-functional in safe mode. Secondly, I could not find the Viewpoint folder after I removed the program (although I suspect this is how it's supposed to be).
