Hijacklog attached-Something has my computer
Hi, I need help trying to get my computer straightened out. It has something always running on it and it moves slooow. Could someone please help me? Thanks for any advice!

Hello Itsmenks and welcome to TSF...
In order to assist you better, we recommend that you Subscribe to this thread to be notified of fixes as soon as they are posted by our Team. You can do this simply by clicking the "Thread Tools" button located in the original thread line and selecting "Subscribe to this Thread". Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should not have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below. Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that 'Display the contents of system folders' is checked. Windows XP's search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that Search system folders, Search hidden files and folders, and Search subfolders are checked. If you have a fast internet connection (broadband), run an online virus scan at TrendMicro http://uk.trendmicro-europe.com/ente...all_launch.php. Just follow the instructions on the site to run the online scan. If any viruses/trojans are detected, try to delete or clean them in that site. Otherwise, make sure your antivirus program has the latest definitions and run a full system scan. Please download Ad-aware SE and install it if you don't have it already. Make sure it's the newest version and check for any updates before running it. Also go here to get the plug-in for fixing VX2 variants. To run this tool, go into Ad-aware->Add-ons and select VX2 Cleaner. Then click Run Tool and OK to start it. If it's clean, it will say Status System Clean. Otherwise, you will have to click on the Clean button to remove the VX2 infection. Also make sure to customize the settings in Ad-aware for better scan results. Run the scan and fix everything that it finds. Download and install Spybot S&D http://security.kolla.de/. Run Spybot and click on the 'Search for Updates' button. Install any updates that are available. Now click Mode menu and choose 'Advanced Mode'. Next click on Immunize to your left. Click the Immunize button (green cross) on top to Immunize your computer - you should do this each time there is an update. Now go to Tools->Resident and make sure that TeaTimer is checked. What this will do is monitor any system/registry changes and will ask you for permission to change any of these settings. Now click on the 'Spybot-S&D' option on the top left to go back to the main screen. Next click on the 'Check for Problems' button. Let it run the scan. If it finds something, check all those in RED and hit the 'Fix Selected Problems' button. Exit Spybot. If you keep getting the DSO Exploit entries, even after you updated Windows and fixed them, then download the Spybot DSO Exploit Fix http://majorgeeks.com/download4392.html and install it over the current Spybot installation. Download CWShredder and run it. Click on 'I Agree' button if you agree with it. Click on 'Fix' (it will automatically fix anything it finds for you) and OK. If it asks if you want to delete a certain random file, choose No and post that filename here. Let it finish the scan and then hit Next and Exit. The Temp folders should be cleaned out periodically as installation programs and hijack programs leave a lot of junk there. Download CleanUp! (Alternate Link if main link don't work) and install it. Do not run it yet... For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep). Reboot into Safe Mode (hit F8 key until menu shows up). Make sure to close any open browsers. Go into HijackThis->Config->Misc. Tools->Open process manager. Run CleanUp! and click on CleanUp! button. When it asks you if you want to logoff, click on Yes. You should clear out the files in the Prefetch folder. Go to C:\Windows\ or C:\WINNT\ and look for the Prefetch folder. Open it up and delete all the files in that folder. Reboot into Normal Mode and run new HijackThis scan. If there were some entries that didn't show up in Safe Mode, you may check and fix those that appear now in normal mode (if you do that, make sure to run a new scan again). Save the log file and run KRC HijackThis Analyzer in the same folder to get the result.txt log. Just post the contents of the result.txt file in the forum. |

Hi! Sorry it has taken me so long to get this done. Here are the results of everything I have done so far. My computer seems to be responding better but I am still a little concerned something is still running/using my computer resources. Thanks so much for all your help...Annette

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should not have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.
Reboot into Safe Mode (hit F8 key until menu shows up). Make sure to close any open browsers. Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any): F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINNT\system32\stivc.exe Delete the following Files/Folders (delete folders if no filename is specified) according to their directory (if none, just do a search for them) and delete them if they exist: C:\WINNT\system32\stivc.exe Reboot into Normal Mode and run new HijackThis scan. If there were some entries that didn't show up in Safe Mode, you may check and fix those that appear now in normal mode (if you do that, make sure to run a new scan again). Save the log file and run KRC HijackThis Analyzer in the same folder to get the result.txt log. Just post the contents of the result.txt file in the forum.

Ok, I cannot seem to get rid of the c:\WINNT\system32\stivc.exe. Everytime I delete it, it comes back. I tried renaming it and deleting but it still comes back as stivc.exe. I can not delete the-F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINNT\system32\stivc.exe. I check on it and click on fix selected and it acts like its doing it but it is always still there. Now my computer is attempting to send out random emails of all kinds, my symantec is catching them but it locks up my computer with a million rejects from symantec. What do I do next? Thanks, Annette

Download this virus checker and tool from eScan
Mwav.exe (Use Link 3) 1. Save it to a folder. 2. Reboot into safe mode 3. Double click the Mwav.exe file.(This is a stand alone tool and NOT just a virus checker......so it won't install anything) 4.Select all local drives, scan all files, press SCAN and when it is completed, anything found will be displayed in the lower pane. 5. In the Virus Log Information Pane...... Left click and Highlight all the info in the Lower pane--- Use "CTRL C" on your Keyboard to copy all found in the lower pane and save it to a notepad file *Note* If prompted that a Virus was found and you need to purchase the product to remove the malware, just close out the prompt and let it continue scanning. We are not going to use this to remove anything..but to ID the bad guys. Once you copy that to a notepad file...highlight the text and copy it here

I think my computer is getting worse, it must keep reinfecting itself. The mwav scan came up with 160 infections! WOW! What am I doing wrong? I'm ready for the next step, please :) Thanks again for helping me....Annette

Lets cut this down a bit. Please empty your Quarantine folder in Symantec.
Download and install CleanUp http://cleanup.stevengould.org/ Run the program and reboot/logoff when prompted. Then run mwav.exe again and post it's results.
