IE doesn't work and other problems
Something happened last night and IE won't work (I can't see anything on the page, don't have an address toolbar, etc.) I also can't double-click and execute anything on my desktop, I have to right-click and hit open.

I joined this forum tonight on a spearate laptop and downloaded Hijack This. Luckily, I have a home wireless LAN and can access files back and forth.

My System

Before you do anything else, please create a folder for HijackThis and put it in a permanent folder (like C:\HJT) instead of the Temp folder. This is required because HijackThis will create backups and we don't want them to be deleted.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should not have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that Display the contents of System Folders' is checked. Windows XP's search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that Search system folders, Search hidden files and folders, and Search subfolders are checked.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

Turn off system restore by right clicking on My Computer and go to Properties->System Restore and check the box for Turn off System Restore. Click Apply and then OK. Restart your computer. After we are finished with your log file and verified that it's clean, you may turn it back on and create a new restore point.

Download AboutBuster and unzip it to a folder on your the Desktop. Do not run it yet.

Right click on this link (http://www.greyknight17.com/spy/DelO15Domains.inf) and choose Save As. Save it to your desktop. Right click on that file and choose Install. You may delete it afterwards.

Reboot into Safe Mode (hit F8 key until menu shows up). Make sure to close any open browsers. Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

I can't find enough information for this file -> C:\WINDOWS\system32\winok.exe
Right click on that file and go to Properties. Then go to the Version tab and see what information you can get from there (Company, Description, etc.) and post it here.

Run AboutBuster and follow the prompts to scan (choose Yes/OK for all). It will ask you if you want a second scan, choose Yes. Save the log file and post it here.

Delete the following Files/Folders (delete folders if no filename is specified) according to their directory (if none, just do a search for them) and delete them if they exist:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\ohhgs.dll
C:\WINDOWS\addyt.dll
C:\WINDOWS\nethg32.exe
C:\WINDOWS\iepp.exe

Reboot into Normal Mode and run new HijackThis scan. If there were some entries that didn't show up in Safe Mode, you may check and fix those that appear now in normal mode (if you do that, make sure to run a new scan again). Save the log file and run KRC HijackThis Analyzer in the same folder to get the result.txt log. Just post the contents of the result.txt file in the forum.

To help prevent future spyware installations/infections, please read the Anti-Spyware Tutorial and use the tools/programs provided.

Thanks for your reply.

I followed the above instructions. Some issues:
1. Couldn't get to the Windows XP search feature. That item on the Start menu isn't working (this happened at the time of the crash/infection.) Therefore I couldn't verify that system folders, hidden files/folders and subfolders options were checked.
2. I couldn't find the following in the HJT scan:
O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [iepp.exe] C:\WINDOWS\iepp.exe
3. I couldn't find any of the O15 - Trusted zone / Trusted IP Range in the latest HJT scan.
4. I found c:\windows\iepp.exe and deleted it, but couldn't find c:\windows\system32\ohhgs.dll, c:\windows\addyt.dll, or c:\windows\nethg32.exe.
5. I could not find c:\windows\system32\winok.exe, so I can't show the properties.

Results:
Internet Explorer still doesn't work. Now it doesn't even give me a blank window, but asks me to download a file called "google.html" and then closes. Also, Windows media player doesn't work, and I don't have any programs visible in the add/remove programs window in control panel. I can't click on anything in the start menu and get it to run (if available, I can right click and hit "open" and it will work, but it's only available for some programs.) Finally, I still don't have the ability to search for files/folders... When I click the option nothing happens.

Let's try fixing it one more time and see if those things will work afterwards.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should not have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

The Temp folders should be cleaned out periodically as installation programs and hijack programs leave a lot of junk there. Download CleanUp! (Alternate Link if main link don't work) and install it. Run CleanUp! and click on CleanUp! button. When it asks you if you want to logoff, click on Yes.

Reboot into Safe Mode (hit F8 key until menu shows up). Make sure to close any open browsers. Go into HijackThis->Config->Misc. Tools->Open process manager. Select the following and click Kill process for each one if they are still listed (they shouldn't be - but double check it):

C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\21.tmp.exe

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

O23 - Service: Network Security Service - Unknown - C:\WINDOWS\system32\winok.exe (file missing)

Delete the following Files/Folders (delete folders if no filename is specified) according to their directory (if none, just do a search for them) and delete them if they exist:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\winok.exe

Reboot into Normal Mode and run new HijackThis scan. If there were some entries that didn't show up in Safe Mode, you may check and fix those that appear now in normal mode (if you do that, make sure to run a new scan again). Save the log file and run KRC HijackThis Analyzer in the same folder to get the result.txt log. Just post the contents of the result.txt file in the forum.

I went through the instructions exactly as listed. Except when I ran HJT, I now had some of those O15 - Trusted Zone entries. I also checked them and hit fix. However, when I would do a scan right after, they would be back.

Your log is clean. If you disabled System Restore, make sure to enable it now.

To help prevent future spyware installations/infections, please read the Anti-Spyware Tutorial (http://www.greyknight17.com/spyware.htm#prevent) and use the tools provided.

Are there any problems now? If not, you should be set to go.

Thanks for all the help. I still have a variety of problems with windows (functions not available, etc.) and IE still won't work. I was going to try to upgrade to SP2 to see if that worked, but the only way I can get to the internet is through Netscape since IE won't work, and you have to be using IE to get windows update set. Do you know of any way I can completely uninstall IE and reinstall to see if I can get to the windows update, or perhaps load an older version of IE? I tried running ie6setup.exe (the SP1 update) from the MS site, and I got the message "setup cannot complete. Detected a newer version of IE."

Two recommendations:

Download Winsock2Fix and unzip it. Then double-click on it to run it.

Also, an IE Repair may be the way to go here:

Your IE problem
Your problem sounds much like mine did. I couldn't access windows updates, no system registry, no windows media player, no search companion at the start button, etc. I was missing dll files. Maybe the fix will help you as well.

Here's what you do:

You need to reregister two dll files. *please note* there is a space between the first group of letters/numbers and the second group.

Go to start, run and type exactly as shown:
