hijackthis log - watools.exe, toolbars.dll, pib.exe
Thank you for looking at this.
I have run ad-aware, spybot, and cwshredder...it can not clean it up. In looking at old posts, I have tried to do it manually, not luck. So, here is the logfile from hijackthis. Please let me know if anyone has any insights. Much, much appreciated! Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should not have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.
Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that Display the contents of System Folders' is checked. Windows XP's search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that Search system folders, Search hidden files and folders, and Search subfolders are checked. For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep). Turn off system restore by right clicking on My Computer and go to Properties->System Restore and check the box for Turn off System Restore. Click Apply and then OK. Restart your computer. After we are finished with your log file and verified that it's clean, you may turn it back on and create a new restore point. Download AboutBuster and unzip it to a folder on your the Desktop. Do not run it yet. The Temp folders should be cleaned out periodically as installation programs and hijack programs leave a lot of junk there. Download CleanUp! (Alternate Link if main link don't work) and install it. Run CleanUp! and click on CleanUp! button. When it asks you if you want to logoff, click on Yes. Reboot into Safe Mode (hit F8 key until menu shows up). Make sure to close any open browsers. Go into HijackThis->Config->Misc. Tools->Open process manager. Select the following and click Kill process for each one if they are still listed (they shouldn't be - but double check it): C:\WINDOWS\nodes.exe C:\PROGRA~1\Toolbar\PIB.exe C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\WinTools\WToolsA.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\WinTools\WToolsS.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\WinTools\WSup.exe C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr.exe Uninstall the following via the Add/Remove Panel (Start->(Settings)->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs) if they exist: Toolbar WinTools Viewpoint (all apps) Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any): R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = about:blank R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,SearchAssistant = about:blank R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,CustomizeSearch = res://C:\PROGRA~1\Toolbar\toolbar.dll/sa R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = about:blank R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch = res://C:\PROGRA~1\Toolbar\toolbar.dll/sa R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Connection Wizard,ShellNext = http://4bf65.ilxt.info/popup7.php?pin=34 R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing O2 - BHO: (no name) - {87766247-311C-43B4-8499-3D5FEC94A183} - C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\WinTools\WToolsB.dll O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {339BB23F-A864-48C0-A59F-29EA915965EC} - (no file) O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ViewMgr] C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [mswspl] C:\WINDOWS\nodes.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WinTools] C:\Program Files\Common Files\WinTools\WToolsA.exe O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [WinTools] C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\WinTools\WToolsA.exe /boot O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [Svr32 spool service] C:\WINDOWS\System32\spoolsrv32.exe O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [WinTools] C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\WinTools\WToolsA.exe O4 - HKCU\..\RunOnce: [Svr32 spool service] C:\WINDOWS\System32\spoolsrv32.exe O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {120E090D-9136-4b78-8258-F0B44B4BD2AC} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\ms.exe (file missing) O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: MaxSpeed - {120E090D-9136-4b78-8258-F0B44B4BD2AC} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\ms.exe (file missing) O16 - DPF: {11111111-1111-1111-1111-111111113457} - file://c:\ied_s7.cab O16 - DPF: {11111111-1111-1111-1111-511111113457} - file://c:\x.cab O16 - DPF: {11111111-1111-1111-1111-511111113458} - file://c:\x.cab O16 - DPF: {22222222-2222-2222-4444-566661888858} - file://c:\x.cab O16 - DPF: {563ED66E-531B-51D2-5DB0-5080C83DA4EB} - ms-its:mhtml:file://C:\MAIN.MHT!http://69.50.164.12/exp/mht/sext01....gaInstaller.exe O18 - Filter: text/html - {EE7A946E-61FA-4979-87B8-A6C462E6FA62} - C:\WINDOWS\httpfilter.dll O21 - SSODL: SystemCheck2 - {54645654-2225-4455-44A1-9F4543D34545} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\vbsys2 (file missing) Run AboutBuster and follow the prompts to scan (choose Yes/OK for all). It will ask you if you want a second scan, choose Yes. Save the log file and post it here. Delete the following Files/Folders (delete folders if no filename is specified) according to their directory (if none, just do a search for them) and delete them if they exist: c:\ied_s7.cab c:\x.cab C:\MAIN.MHT! C:\WINDOWS\httpfilter.dll C:\WINDOWS\nodes.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\spoolsrv32.exe <<Be careful to get this exact file name! C:\Program Files\Toolbar\ C:\Program Files\Common Files\WinTools\ C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\ Reboot into Normal Mode and run new HijackThis scan. Save the log file and run HijackThis Analyzer in the same folder to get the result.txt log. Just post the contents of the result.txt file in the forum. Make sure to update Windows and Internet Explorer at http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com. Your XP is VERY outdated and a big part of your vulnerability!

HijackThis can not kill process
Thank you for the reply.
I followed your instructions. Cleanup got ride of a bunch of stuff. When I rebooted in Safe mode, and list the processes, the only two that were left were C:\Program Files\Common Files\WinToolWToolsA.exe, and the same path to WSup.exe. When I try to kill either of these processes, I get a message that says: "The selected process could not be killed. It may be protected by Windows." "This process might be a service, which you can stop from Services applet in Admin Tools." I do not have any browsers open, but something wierd is happening to this machine that might be a problem. The Active Destop keeps getting activated. I go and clear it out, and a while later, it goes back on. It might be a virus. Any thoughts? Thank you! |

Probably all part of the same nasty package. Skip the Kill Process and proceed with everything else. Post a fresh log when done. Thx for checking....

Mostly gone
I have followed the instructions. The HijackThis log is below (I know you asked for results.txt, but Norton is freaking about over that file for some reason...another issue to resolve). The AboutBuster log file is at the very bottom.
It looks like things are mostly cleared up except spoolsrv32.exe. ANy suggestions on how to get ride of spoolsrv32.exe? When I try to fix it with HijackThis, it seems to execute the command (no complaints), but the very next scan shows the same thing. Thanks! Download KillBox (http://www.greyknight17.com/spy/KillBox.exe). Run KillBox and check the box that says 'End Explorer Shell While Killing File'. Next click on 'Replace on Reboot' and check the box underneath that. For each of the following files below, check the box that says 'Unregister .dll Before Deleting' if it's not grayed out. Copy and paste each of the following into the top line (hitting the X button for each file - choose NO when it asks if you want to reboot until you get to the last file to delete):
C:\WINDOWS\System32\spoolsrv32.exe [/b]Reboot into Normal Mode and run new HijackThis scan. Save the log file and run HijackThis Analyzer in the same folder to get the result.txt log. Just post the contents of the result.txt file in the forum.

Shoulda noticed this one before....
Fix this entry in HJT: O16 - DPF: {563ED66E-531B-51D2-5DB0-5080C83DA4EB} - ms-its:mhtml:file://C:\MAIN.MHT!http://69.50.164.12/exp/mht/sext01....gaInstaller.exe and delete this file : C:\MAIN.MHT! Otherwise, your log is clean. If you disabled System Restore, make sure to enable it now. To help prevent future spyware installations/infections, please read the Anti-Spyware Tutorial (http://www.greyknight17.com/spyware.htm#prevent) and use the tools provided. Are there any problems now? If not, you should be set to go.
