Trojan.StartPage
This is my first post, so please accept my apologies in advance for being a bit ignorant.
The Problem: When I startup my PC, norton pops up a window indicating that it has detected Trojan.StartPage on my computer and cannot fix the problem. All virus definitions are up to date. I ran a full system scan in safe mode and it did not find anything. upon startup in normal mode, it detects it again. There is also another window (mshta.exe) running behind the scenes that I cant view. If I end that process, the window "behind the scenes" goes away. I ran spybot and adaware and they found nothing. PLEASE HELP Here is my Hijackthis log... Welcome to TSF.
Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should not have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below. Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that Display the contents of System Folders' is checked. Windows XP's search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that Search system folders, Search hidden files and folders, and Search subfolders are checked. For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep). Turn off system restore by right clicking on My Computer and go to Properties->System Restore and check the box for Turn off System Restore. Click Apply and then OK. Restart your computer. After we are finished with your log file and verified that it's clean, you may turn it back on and create a new restore point. If you have a fast internet connection (broadband), run an online virus scan at TrendMicro. Just follow the instructions on the site to run the online scan. Otherwise, make sure your antivirus program has the latest definitions and run a full system scan. The Temp folders should be cleaned out periodically as installation programs and hijack programs leave a lot of junk there. Download CleanUp! (Alternate Link if main link don't work) and install it. Run CleanUp! and click on CleanUp! button. When it asks you if you want to logoff, click on Yes. Reboot into Safe Mode (hit F8 key until menu shows up). Make sure to close any open browsers. Go into HijackThis->Config->Misc. Tools->Open process manager. Select the following and click Kill process for each one if they are still listed (they shouldn't be - but double check it): C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\realscannerm.exe Uninstall the following via the Add/Remove Panel (Start->(Settings)->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs) if they exist: Viewpoint OfferApp Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any): R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,Default_Search_URL = http://www.searchv.com/1/search.html R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,Default_Page_URL = http://www.searchv.com/1/ R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {1C78AB3F-A857-482e-80C0-3A1E5238A565} - (no file) O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FDD3B846-8D59-4ffb-8758-209B6AD74ACC} - (no file) O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [IPInSightLAN 02] "C:\Program Files\Visual Networks\Visual IP InSight\SBC\IPClient.exe" -l O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [IPInSightMonitor 02] "C:\Program Files\Visual Networks\Visual IP InSight\SBC\IPMon32.exe" O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [OfferApp] C:\Program Files\OfferApp\OfferApp.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ViewMgr] C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SScanner] C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\realscannerm.exe O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.hta O8 - Extra context menu item: &iSearch The Web - res://C:\WINDOWS\System32\toolbar.dll/SEARCH.HTML O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {08B0E5C0-4FCB-11CF-AAA5-00401C608501} - (no file) O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Sun Java Console - {08B0E5C0-4FCB-11CF-AAA5-00401C608501} - (no file) O16 - DPF: {56336BCB-3D8A-11D6-A00B-0050DA18DE71} (RdxIE Class) - http://software-dl.real.com/1186b95...ip/RdxIE601.cab Delete the following Files/Folders (delete folders if no filename is specified) according to their directory (if none, just do a search for them) and delete them if they exist: C:\Program Files\OfferApp\ C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\ Microsoft Office.hta C:\WINDOWS\System32\toolbar.dll Reboot into Normal Mode and run new HijackThis scan. Save the log file and run HijackThis Analyzer in the same folder to get the result.txt log. Just post the contents of the result.txt file in the forum. To help prevent future spyware installations/infections, please read the Anti-Spyware Section and use the tools provided.

Thanks for the quick response
I did all of the suggested steps. The background window no longer pops up at start-up, however, Norton continues to detect the trojan.

You will need to go into SpyBot and turn off TeaTimer to get these last couple. It may be blocking your ayyempts.
========== Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should not have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below. Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and uncheck 'Hide protected operating system files'. Download CWShredder and click on 'Fix' (it will automatically fix anything it finds for you). If it asks if you want to delete a certain random file, choose No and post that filename here. Reboot into Safe Mode (hit F8 key until menu shows up). Make sure to close any open browsers. Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any): R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,Default_Search_URL = http://www.searchv.com/1/search.html R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,Default_Page_URL = http://www.searchv.com/1/ O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FDD3B846-8D59-4ffb-8758-209B6AD74ACC} - (no file) O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Yahoo! Pager] 1 O4 - Global Startup: RealAudio.exe O16 - DPF: {1C78AB3F-A857-482E-80C0-3A1E5238A565} - file://C:\install.cab O16 - DPF: {56336BCB-3D8A-11D6-A00B-0050DA18DE71} - Delete the following Files/Folders (delete folders if no filename is specified) according to their directory (if none, just do a search for them) and delete them if they exist: RealAudio.exe C:\install.cab Reboot into Normal Mode and run new HijackThis scan. Save the log file and run HijackThis Analyzer in the same folder to get the result.txt log. Just post the contents of the result.txt file in the forum.

Your log is clean. If you disabled System Restore, make sure to enable it now.
To help prevent future spyware installations/infections, please read the Anti-Spyware Section (http://www.greyknight17.com/spyware.htm#prevent) and use the tools provided. Are there any problems now? If not, you should be set to go. I really do not know what the "typical" donation is, as Danrak, the owner, handles those. We are just very happy when users give what they feel our advice was worth to them. Me, I'm more of a Lamborghini man......red please. ![]()
