Computer is quickly dying

I wasnt exactly sure where to post this, but this seems to be the most active forum, so I figured this would work. There is SOMETHING wrong with my computer that Adaware, Spybot, and Symantec AV are not finding. It started with my internet not working and RunDLL errors popping up everywhere. I used a system restore point, and that seemed to fix the problem. Since then, every time I restarted my computer it gave me a RunDLL error involving something about the program Wild Tangent. Starting today, every time I try to access ANY folder on my computer, Explorer crashes, and I cannot access it. I got Hijack This and ran it and found an entry involving RunDLL and Wild Tangent and deleted it. I've been frantically looking through my MSConfig startup processes and my Task Manager trying to figure out what the problem could be. If anyone has any idea of what is wrong, PLEASE let me know asap. If at all possible, I would like to avoid reformatting/reinstalling XP...

Thanks

Welcome to TSF.

You posted in the right category. We can help you fix this without doing a format.

Please download HijackThis - this program will help us determine if there are any spyware/malware on your computer. Create a folder at C:\HJT and move HijackThis.exe there. Double click on the program to run it.

1. If it gives you an intro screen, just choose 'Do a system scan and save a logfile'.
2. If you don't get the intro screen, just hit Scan and then click on Save log.
3. Get HijackThis Analyzer and save it to the same folder as the hijackthis.log file. Run HijackThis Analyzer and type in y if you agree. The result.txt file will open up in Notepad. Copy the whole result.txt log and post it in the forum. We do not need the original hijackthis.log (unless we ask for it). Do not fix anything in HijackThis since they may be harmless.

It shouldn't affect Opera, so that's ok.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should not have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that Display the contents of System Folders' is checked. Windows XP's search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that Search system folders, Search hidden files and folders, and Search subfolders are checked.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

Turn off system restore by right clicking on My Computer and go to Properties->System Restore and check the box for Turn off System Restore. Click Apply and then OK. Restart your computer. After we are finished with your log file and verified that it's clean, you may turn it back on and create a new restore point.

Reboot into Safe Mode (hit F8 key until menu shows up). Make sure to close any open browsers. Go into HijackThis->Config->Misc. Tools->Open process manager. Select the following and click Kill process for each one if they are still listed (they shouldn't be - but double check it):

C:\WINDOWS\system32\wcgbdw.exe
C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr.exe

Uninstall the following via the Add/Remove Panel (Start->(Settings)->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs) if they exist:

Viewpoint

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

Delete the following Files/Folders (delete folders if no filename is specified) according to their directory (if none, just do a search for them) and delete them if they exist:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\wcgbdw.exe
C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\
C:\WINDOWS\ZServ.dll
C:\Program Files\Common Files\updater\

Reboot into Normal Mode and run new HijackThis scan. Save the log file and run HijackThis Analyzer in the same folder to get the result.txt log. Just post the contents of the result.txt file in the forum.

To help prevent future spyware installations/infections, please read the Anti-Spyware Section and use the tools provided.

The only problem with all this is I cannot get to My Computer or Add/Remove programs or ANY folders anywhere on my computer. I am confined strictly to my desktop and the various shortcuts I have on it.

OK, we'll have to try doing this in the command prompt then. What the heck, I'll make it easier. Just go to Start->Run and type in notepad and hit OK. Copy and paste the following into Notepad:

del C:\WINDOWS\system32\wcgbdw.exe
deltree C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\
del C:\WINDOWS\ZServ.dll
deltree C:\Program Files\Common Files\updater\

Save the file as "delete.bat". Make sure to include the quotes. Now double click on it to run it. You may delete this file after you are done with it.

Restart and post a new log file. See if you can access your other folders now.

Sadly, I still cannot access any folders on my computer

I used MSConfig to disable ViewMgr and wcgbdw at startup, but it seems as though they're still there :(

Yes, it's still there. Something is terribly wrong here, so let's try running an antivirus scan. Could you open up any browsers to go online now (or do it from your own antivirus - update it first)? If you can:

If you have a fast internet connection (broadband), run an online virus scan at TrendMicro. Just follow the instructions on the site to run the online scan. Otherwise, make sure your antivirus program has the latest definitions and run a full system scan.

I've run symantec several times since the problems started, and I just downloaded PC-cillin a couple minute ago. Something appears to be turning off BOTH of the real-time virus scans... and Symantec has not found any viruses (the file definitions are current.) I'm not sure if PC-cillin will find anything if Symantec didnt, but I'm scanning anyway.

Do you have a fast internet connection (DSL or cable)? If you do, it's recommended that you run the online scan instead.

TrendMicro and Panda both will not work with Opera, and my IE does not work at all, are there any other online virus scanners that will work with Opera?

The link I gave you should work with all browsers. Do you have Java installed? You will need it.

If you have a fast internet connection, download Firefox and install it. Use that to run the online scan.

PC-cillin found both Troj_Ghetto.a and Troj_Startpag.al, neither of which symantec found. I cant find any information on Troj_Ghetto.a... do you know if it would be capable of turning off my virus scans and not allowing me to access any folders? Also do you have any suggestions for fixing any damage they may have caused?

It's possible for it to do that. So it can't be removed. Does it say at least which files are infected? Another question, did you use firefox to run this?

To fix...Go to Start->Run and type in sfc /scannow and hit OK. Run that program to replace any missing or corrupted system files.

OK, that's more than enough information for us to know what's going on (at least some clue). We have seen this file before and will need the below files now:

Before doing anything, MAKE SURE that you can keep your computer on (at least until we get it fixed). This infection requires us to detect and remove it without rebooting or restarting your computer (unless the instructions say so). If you can't keep your computer on today, then I suggest that you don't get the logs yet until you are ready. With that said (when ready):

Please download the following programs re
