isearch and hotsearch won't die
I have some major problems trying to get rid of these programs. They keep coming back. Adaware 6.0 (build 6.181), SpySubtract Pro 2.61 and SpyBot S&D 1.3 have all been run dozens of times. They say everything is clean, and then I run internet explorer and it goes immediately to hotsearchbar.com about 10 times trying to run a cgi script (according to the address bar) instead of my homepage (I have checked the tool settings, too). It also keeps popping up on isearch.com and pop-ups still keep coming up! It then proceeds to install software on my computer. I have read some of the forums, edited my registry at least 25 times, etc. I have looked through hijackthis's log and cannot see anything immediately that jumps out.
Any suggestions? Here is my HijackThis log: Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.0 Scan saved at 10:40:59 AM, on 12/31/2004 Platform: Windows XP SP1 (WinNT 5.01.2600) MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP1 (6.00.2800.1106) Running processes: C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE C:\WINDOWS\system32\LEXBCES.EXE C:\WINDOWS\system32\LEXPPS.EXE C:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exe C:\Program Files\Network Associates\VirusScan\Avsynmgr.exe C:\WINDOWS\runservice.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\VS7Debug\mdm.exe C:\Program Files\Network Associates\VirusScan\VsStat.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\RunDll32.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\sistray.EXE C:\Program Files\Network Associates\VirusScan\Vshwin32.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\khooker.exe C:\Program Files\ahead\InCD\InCD.exe C:\Program Files\Microsoft Hardware\Mouse\point32.exe C:\Program Files\Microsoft Hardware\Keyboard\type32.exe C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Network Associates\McShield\Mcshield.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\LXSUPMON.EXE C:\Program Files\Network Associates\VirusScan\Avconsol.exe C:\Program Files\Network Associates\VirusScan\Webscanx.exe C:\Program Files\Logitech\SetPoint\KEM.exe C:\Program Files\interMute\SpySubtract\SpySub.exe C:\Program Files\Logitech\SetPoint\KHALMNPR.EXE G:\Downloads\HijackThis.exe R0 - Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should not have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.
Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that Display the contents of System Folders' is checked. Windows XP's search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that Search system folders, Search hidden files and folders, and Search subfolders are checked. For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep). Turn off system restore by right clicking on My Computer and go to Properties->System Restore and check the box for Turn off System Restore. Click Apply and then OK. Restart your computer. After we are finished with your log file and verified that it's clean, you may turn it back on and create a new restore point. Reboot into Safe Mode (hit F8 key until menu shows up). Make sure to close any open browsers. Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any): O2 - BHO: ohb - {285B5CCD-C3F0-4EB6-9632-7D0A3C3AF824} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\hsrb.dll O2 - BHO: IE Update Class - {5B4AB8E2-6DC5-477A-B637-BF3C1A2E5993} - C:\WINDOWS\isrvs\sysupd.dll O4 - Startup: PowerReg Scheduler.exe O23 - Service: ZESOFT - Unknown - C:\WINDOWS\zeta.exe (file missing) Delete the following Files/Folders (delete folders if no filename is specified) according to their directory (if none, just do a search for them) and delete them if they exist: C:\WINDOWS\System32\hsrb.dll C:\WINDOWS\isrvs\ C:\WINDOWS\zeta.exe Reboot into Normal Mode and run new HijackThis scan. Save the log file and run HijackThis Analyzer in the same folder to get the result.txt log. Just post the contents of the result.txt file in the forum. To help prevent future spyware installations/infections, please read the Anti-Spyware Section and use the tools provided.

I think everything is OK now...but time will tell
Thanks for the help...one more thing you probably should have added... WinsockXPfix.exe.
After I did what you suggested, my internet slowed to an unusable crawl with ie taking 100% of system resources! Rebooting did not help, but a quick run of winsockXPfix did. Here is my new log from HijackThis...let me know if there is anything else there that needs to be fixed. AND THANKS A TON! I would not have guessed that some of those programs were spyware. Your log is clean. If you disabled System Restore, make sure to enable it now.
To help prevent future spyware installations/infections, please read the Anti-Spyware Section (http://www.greyknight17.com/spyware.htm#prevent) and use the tools provided. Are there any problems now? If not, you should be set to go. ![]()
