msblaster like activity on XP Pro SP3
Hello,
I have a home/office network with 3 computers 2 x wireless notebooks 1 x wired PC. 4 weeks ago I reinstalled XP Pro with slipstreamed SP3 from scratch. Nothing odd I've done it loads of times with no issue. Yesterday, the wired PC started displaying "System Shutdown - The system is shutting down, please save all work in progress and log off. Any unsaved changes will be lost. This shutdown was initiated by NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM - Message - Windows must now restart because the Remote Procedure Call (RPC) service terminated unexpectedly" It did this about 8 or 9 times over a 5 hour period. Next, I could not copy and paste files or copy text from web pages in firefox. Then Windows Media Player would not play WMV, AVI or MPG files (Have not tried other types) WMP would load upon double clicking a video file, but faild to play the video. The work around was to go file->open-> etc etc. Then videos played just fine. Also, windows update site would not load in IE and when I tried in firefox with the IETab extension, like I've done a million times before, I got a message about changing the user persistence setting, or something like that. Also, the Windows Update notification in the system tray shutdown by itself even though there was 1 update for outlook junkmail filter to download. (I manage updates myself, I just use the notification to let me know there are updates.) Then 1 notebook started doing the exact same thing. Everything was fine up till yesterday. There is no, 'little Johnny' here to blame for downloading dodgy software or surfing porn or dodgy sites. I keep a tight reign on my network and what software is installed on any of the computers I have the firewall in my SMC router turned on as well as running the Symantec client firewall / AV software. I have run, on all the computers, Spybot Search and destroy, Malwarebites' antimalware and the MS malicious software detection tool and come up clean. I also did a full system scan with NAV and came up clean. The notebook with the issue is not running a slipstreamed version of windows, but a normal SP3 update. I have removed the other notebook from the network for now. Research suggested that the above behaviour can result from a msblaster worm infection, but I am up to date with all updates on all computers. I did find a dutch site where a repair tech user was given a laptop with the same issue on 5th Sept 08, and he had to reinstall as no resolution was found. I have run the shutdown -a command to abort the shutdown and gone into services.msc and changed the shutdown setting to 'restart service' for the RPC service and rebooted. Currently, I am not experiencing any more issues and every thing seems to be working fine, but it is very odd that the notebook suddenly started doing the same thing about 10 minutes after the main PC. The second notebook was off at the time. Here's my hijackthis log. Re: msblaster like activity on XP Pro SP3
Bump
Still getting MS update issues and cut and paste issues on both computers affected, but the RPC shutdown has not occurred, possibly because I set it to restart service. Does anyone have any ideas ... at all??? Cheers. |
