Hi-

I have been working on these for the last couple of days. I have followed the instructions in the other threads that seem to have a similar problem to mine, but it never seems to be to any avail.

There seems to be a problem with my winlogon as it will occasionally error and then blue screen me.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Before doing anything, MAKE SURE that you can keep your computer on (at least until we get it fixed). This infection requires us to detect and remove it without rebooting or restarting your computer. If you can't keep your computer on today, then I suggest that you don't get the logs yet until you are ready. With that said (when ready):

Please download the following programs required for the removal process:

Kill2Me http://www.greyknight17.com/spy/Kill2Me.exe

Hoster http://www.greyknight17.com/spy/Hoster.exe

KillBox http://www.greyknight17.com/spy/KillBox.exe
notify.bat http://www.greyknight17.com/spy/notify.bat

Please follow the steps below:

1. Run Kill2Me.

2. Unzip the pv.zip files contents to your Desktop (NOTE: It MUST be on your Desktop!).
a) Open that folder on your Desktop and double click on the runme.bat file.
b) Type in 3 and hit your Enter key. Save the log file.
c) Type in 5 and hit your Enter key. Save the log file.
d) Remember to copy and paste both of these log files in the forum AFTER you are finished with the rest of the steps below.

3. Run notify.bat and it should open up a notify.txt Notepad file. Copy and paste this in the forum later.

4. Run VX2Finder(126) and click on the Find VX2.BetterInternet button. Click Make Log and post this in the fourm later.

If you must restart/reboot your computer, you will have to basically start all over again (starting from Step 2 above with PV). The detection and removal process must be done at the same time without the PC being rebooted.

We also need a list of files in the following folders:

C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\
C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\ - there might be a download folder here. We are looking for any randomly named files. Post anything that looks suspicious.

Here are the results of everything that I ran. I rebooted my machine since I last ran HiJackThis. I wasn't sure if you needed a new log from it. So, I included one at the end just in case.

My System

Please print out the instructions here so that you can follow along more easily.

This is a new type of hijack and may take a couple of tries to remove it. If you have any questions during this process, please ask us (just don't reboot).

1. Run VX2Finder(126) again.

2. Run CleanUp! program and click on CleanUp button. Say NO when it asks you to reboot/logoff. Check your Downloaded Program Files folder for any program that you do not recongized and remove anything in question.

3. Delete the following files:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\guard.tmp <<< If it exists!
C:\WINDOWS\EliteToolBar\ - delete folder

4. Go to Start->Run and type in regedit and hit OK. Go to File->Export and save the registry somewhere as a backup. After that's done, go to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify\URL

Find the entry key (on the right pane) for h20q0cd5ef0.dll. Click on it and delete it. Close Regedit.

5. Run KillBox now.
a) Click on the 'Delete on Reboot' button.
b) Check 'End Explorer Shell While Killing File.'

Copy and paste each of the following locations (one by one) into KillBox (check 'Unregister .dll Before Deleting' if it's not grayed out) and hit the X button for each one (when it asks you if you want to reboot, click NO):

C:\WINDOWS\system32\nsmsmgr.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\h20q0cd5ef0.dll
c:\windows\system32\kalvznr32.exe

6. On the reboot hit the F8 key (repeatedly until a menu shows up) to enter Safe Mode.

7. Run HijackThis and do a scan. Check and fix the following:

O1 - Hosts: 69.20.16.183 auto.search.msn.com
O1 - Hosts: 69.20.16.183 search.netscape.com
O1 - Hosts: 69.20.16.183 ieautosearch
O1 - Hosts: 69.20.16.183 ieautosearch
O3 - Toolbar: &EliteBar - {825CF5BD-8862-4430-B771-0C15C5CA8DEF} - C:\WINDOWS\EliteToolBar\EliteToolBar version 58.dll
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UserFaultCheck] %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -u
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [kalvsys] c:\windows\system32\kalvznr32.exe

Close HijackThis and run Hoster. Click 'Restore Original Hosts' and click OK.

Run CleanUp! program again and clean everything. Say Yes when it asks you to reboot/logoff.

8. Reboot into Normal Mode and run HijackThis. See if the O1 entries are still in HijackThis. If they are still there, go to c:\windows\system32 and sort the files by date. There will/should be two new DLLs.
a) If those O1 entries did return in HijackThis, paste those two files into KillBox (in Step 5 above) and kill them. Just follow through the rest of the procedures (Steps 5 - 8) like before. Make sure NOT to reboot until you deleted those two files (otherwise the names will change again).
b) If you are having problems removing them yourself, feel free to post those two files here and we'll help you with it. Post them along with the 2 PV logs, notify.txt and a new HijackThis log. Do NOT reboot your computer yet.

Give us a new set of logs (2 PV logs, 1 notify.txt log, 1 VX2Finder log and 1 HijackThis log).

I think it worked. My hosts file hasn't changed and I haven't seen any pop-ups. Here are the log files just to make sure.

I thought I was clean, but apparently I am not. SpyGuard has blocked my homepage from being changed twice in the last couple of days and now an IE Window that is minimized as small as possible and can't be resized is created. I kill it and a new one is created. The Title bar says that is is for www.yupsearch.com. Also, I noticed in my HiJackThis log that EliteToolbar is running again. It is not listed in my Add/Remove Programs list. Should I just let HiJackThis try to fix it or should I go through all the previous steps again?

Also, does anyone know what the HouseCall Control and the Update Class are in the Downloaded Program Files dir?

Hope not a repeat, but maybe....

Fix these entries in HJT:

Close HJT.

Delete this folder & file:

C:\WINDOWS\EliteToolBar\
c:\windows\system32\kalvdfo32.exe

Run CleanUp! again.

Reboot and post a new log.

Hey, thanks again for the help. This just sucks.

Anyway, I followed all of the steps you recommended. I couldn't delete C:\Windows\System32\kalvdfo32.exe because it doesn't exist. I did a File Search and there are no files with that name on my computer. When I rebooted the machine, the other files were generated and I still can't find that file, but yet it still appears in my log again. I looked in Task Manager and kalvdfo32.exe is running and I killed it. Ran another search and still not found.

Any ideas?

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and UNcheck the box labeled 'Hide protected operating system files'.

Try same instructions again....
