Cry help on removing surfsidekick2!

Hello I need help on removing surfsidekick2 but I don’t know how it got on my computer. I tried to deleted it by going to START-My computer-Local Disk (c:) And I went to its folder surfsidekick2.I tried to delete it but it said error deleting file or folder can not delete Ssk.exe: It is being used by another person or program. Close any programs that might be using the file and try again but nothing is open but the screen that has the screen that has the program flies and that is were that folder is.

So can anyone help me! Also if it helps I tried to delete it by my spy sweeper but that can't delete it either.

Thank you
-MOODYGIRL

Try hitting comtrol/alt/delete and look at the running processes for the ssk.exe and other files that are surfsidekick related.End those programs by highlighting them and and choosing end now,then try removing from control panel/add remove programs.Some programs have a removal/uninstall program included in their folder,I would check here before using the other.
Good luck,Mike

A couple things to try...

1) Open the Windows XP Task Manager (by pressing Ctrll+Alt+Del) and look for ssk.exe in the Processes list. If it's there, highlight it and click on End Process button to kill it. Then try deleting the ssk.exe file and folder from your Program Files folder.

2) If that doesn't work, go to the surfsidekick2 folder like you did before, but instead of trying to delete it, rename it (to something like "Deleteme.exe"). Then restart your computer (ssk.exe won't start because it can't be found). Now go to the Program Files folder and delete it.

Assuming one of the above works, you won't have ssk.exe adware on your system anymore. But XP will still try to start it when you restart Windows, which might cause an error message every time you restart. To eliminate that you need to run RegEdit (unless someone has a better option). If you choose to run RegEdit you need to be careful not to make any changes except this one described here:

a. Go to Start menu > Run and type regedit. Click OK. Expand the "folder" names for HKEY_CURRENT_USER > SOFTWARE > Microsoft > Windows > CurrentVersion > Run

b. In the right hand pane, see if there is an entry for Sidekick or ssk.exe. If there is, then highlight it, right-click on it, and select Delete. As long as the only thing you do in Regedit is to delete this sidekick entry, you'll be fine.

Good luck.

See I tried that when I saw it at first ok now I did the last thing you said but it still will not go away even when I delete it. I deleted it but it comes back?!

I'm not clear if you were able to delete the sidekick folder in Program Files or not. If you were able to do that before and it's back, do it again. If you weren't able to do it, even with my prior suggestions, then you need to start your computer in Safe Mode. Start it in Safe Mode and then delete the whole surfsidekick folder.

Once you get it deleted from Program Files, then before restarting Windows again, run regedit and do the same thing I described before. But ALSO use regedit to delete one more thing that I missed in my prior posting: delete surfsidekick from this other folder with regedit: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SOFTWARE > Microsoft > Windows > CurrentVersion > Run

I am basing this info on stuff I am reading about surfsidekick on the Symantec web site.

There are a few more things you can delete via regedit, but the above should do the trick to stop it from running and starting again. Delete these with regedit to completely remove any traces of surfsidekick (but please be very careful in regedit; you can really screw up your system if you do the wrong thing):
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{000AB0005-FF12-42C2-8DF5-39E12E5F9C91}
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\URLSearchHooks\{000AB0005-FF12-42C2-8DF5-39E12E5F9C91}
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\Surf Sidekick_is1

Hi The Bee, let's see a log.

Please download HijackThis - this program will help us determine if there are any spyware/malware on your computer. Create a folder at C:\HJT and move HijackThis.exe there. Run a scan and save the log file. Get HijackThis Analyzer and save it to the same folder as the hijackthis.log file. Run HijackThis Analyzer and type in y if you agree. Open up the result.txt file created. Copy the whole result.txt log and post it in the forum. Do not fix anything in HijackThis since they may be harmless.
