Hi there,

Last week my computer was so riddled with viruses I couldn't fixe, I spent 65 pounds to have everything wiped. Low and behold i have only just had it back a week and i'm in the same boat. Could anyone please help me remove the viruses as I don't have the experience to recognise them in Hijack this. I have run Spybot and it said that it had supposedly cleared all problems, but after restarting and running another scan discovered a host of new viruses in my machine. help please:-(

Oh Faith.........if you stay away from the file sharing, you won't have this recurring problem.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should not have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

You have an outdated version of HijackThis. Click here to get the latest version of HijackThis.

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that Display the contents of System Folders' is checked. Windows XP's search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that Search system folders, Search hidden files and folders, and Search subfolders are checked.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

Turn off system restore by right clicking on My Computer and go to Properties->System Restore and check the box for Turn off System Restore. Click Apply and then OK. Restart your computer. After we are finished with your log file and verified that it's clean, you may turn it back on and create a new restore point.

Please download Ad-aware SE (http://www.greyknight17.com/spyware.htm#adaware) and install it if you don't have it already. Make sure it's the newest version and check for any updates before running it. Go to http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/...2cleaner.shtml to get the plug-in for fixing VX2 variants. To run this tool, go into Ad-aware->Add-ons and select VX2 Cleaner. Then click Run Tool and OK to start it. If it's clean, it will say Status System Clean. Otherwise, you will have to click on the Clean button to remove the VX2 infection. Also make sure to customize (http://www.greyknight17.com/spyware.htm#adaware) the settings in Ad-aware for better scan results. Run the scan and fix everything that it finds.

Reboot into Safe Mode (hit F8 key until menu shows up). Make sure to close any open browsers.

Uninstall the following via the Add/Remove Panel (Start->(Settings)->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs) if they exist:

GMT

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

After several heart attacks and the epiphany that the viruses are due to my ignorance and stupidity, I followed your instructions. and promise never to download anything like Kazaa again.......please forgive my ignorance

I was able to remove phps networking from my machine, but Kazaa set up is still present on my desktop!!!! Not sure what to do there. I couldn'y find MY WAY, CMEII, or GMTin add/remove programs and none of the list that you asked me to remove in hijack this log.


The new log is below, although my computer is still acting funny and my Mozilla firefox isn't working properly. There is are also msgs from something called "trickler" appearing every now and again. Although I don't understand these messages.

Before you do anything else, please create a folder for HijackThis and put it in a permanent folder (like C:\HJT) instead of the Temp folder. This is required because HijackThis will create backups and we don't want them to be deleted.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should not have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that Display the contents of System Folders' is checked. Windows XP's search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that Search system folders, Search hidden files and folders, and Search subfolders are checked.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

If you have a fast internet connection (broadband), run an online virus scan at TrendMicro. Make sure to select the Autoclean option. Otherwise, make sure your antivirus program has the latest definitions and run a full system scan.

Reboot into Safe Mode (hit F8 key until menu shows up). Make sure to close any open browsers. Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

Delete the following Files/Folders (delete folders if no filename is specified) according to their directory (if none, just do a search for them) and delete them if they exist:

c:\documents and settings\user\local settings\temp\ - delete everything in this folder

Reboot into Normal Mode and post a new HijackThis log file so we can make sure it's clean.
