Persistent Pop-up (and blue screen of death)
For starters I just realized that my computer is actually running WinXP (in my account I stated Win98 SE, I suppose because my laptop has had previous problems and runs that OS).
So, I'm running WinXP. History: I can't say what the specific trigger for the problem was - one second the computer was fine and the next it was swimming with adware, malware and spyware. I ran ad-aware and antivirus right away and ended up removing over 200 such programs. However, a few of these programs are refusing to die. [I have a horrible suspicion that my removal of A firewall has been the trigger, although the two events do not correspond exactly in time.] I've run ad aware, antivirus, antispy, online scans and the whole shebang but a few of these little menaces just won't die. Current Problem: Three persistent pop-ups that I've noticed so far: 1) http://69.20.62.53/KEY/DATING.html (advertising a windows registry cleaner); 2) http://e.rn11.com/a/a174-admed-ron (a black screen listing current spyware threats, of all things); 3) http://69.20.56.3/yyy10.html [possibly something to do with AOL, although it pops up very infrequently and I haven't recorded it properly]. Site 1 shows up the most often; Site 2 shows up with slightly less frequency; Site 3 shows up only very infrequently. These things will start up IE on their own accord; even when the DSL is physically disconnected they will interrupt running programs (like games) to no purpose whatsoever. Also, occasionally and most worryingly, the blue screen of death has been showing up - not too frequently but I didn't think WinXP even had a blue screen of death. These blue screens seem to have to do with winlogon.exe (if my computer is to be believed). There also may be a recurring problem with a system file called aklsp.dll (which I have NOT dared to touch at all) - it has come up in some of the scans and I have not tried to remove it. At the moment I am running the Windows Firewall (that comes with the machine) - we also connect through a D-Link 614+ wireless router which seems to come with its own firewall as well. [The firewall I removed was the Norton Internet Security which I figured was overkill as I was told the the router firewall should be fine - I added Windows firewall recently after this experience and am wondering whether I should purchase some kind of firewall.] What I've Tried: I've run Ad-Aware Personal SE (with the most recent updates and the custom settings recommended here), the computer runs Norton Antivirus 2005 (also run with the recent updates), Yahoo Anti-spy (within the yahoo toolbar, as well as its related pest-cleaner program), the online scan recommended on this site and the Hijack This program. The three sites above often show up, but none of the programs seem able to remove them - they show up again even before I've rebooted. I've followed the submission instructions as closely as possible (I had to disconnect the DSL to make sure IE didn't start up by itself and ruin the scans) - I ran ad-aware with the custom settings, rebooted and ran the online scan, downloaded and ran Hijack This without trying to delete anything, downloaded and ran the Hijack This Analyzer and am now posting the unaltered results.txt: Log was analyzed using HijackThis Analyzer - Updated on 11/23/04 Logfile of HijackThis v1.98.2 Scan saved at 12:52:00 AM, on 11/28/2004 Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600) MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP2 (6.00.2900.2180) Running processes: C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccSetMgr.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\SNDSrvc.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\SPBBC\SPBBCSvc.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccEvtMgr.exe C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\navapsvc.exe C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\IWP\NPFMntor.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccApp.exe C:\WINDOWS\mmups.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\CCPD-LC\symlcsvc.exe C:\HJT\HijackThis.exe R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://www.dell4me.com/myway R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.yahoo.com/ R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cust.../www.yahoo.com R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cust.../www.yahoo.com O1 - Hosts: 69.20.16.183 auto.search.msn.com O1 - Hosts: 69.20.16.183 search.netscape.com O1 - Hosts: 69.20.16.183 ieautosearch O3 - Toolbar: Norton AntiVirus - {42CDD1BF-3FFB-4238-8AD1-7859DF00B1D6} - C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\NavShExt.dll O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ccApp] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccApp.exe" O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Symantec NetDriver Monitor] C:\PROGRA~1\SYMNET~1\SNDMon.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [mediamotor.exe] C:\WINDOWS\mmups.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SESync] "C:\Program Files\SED\SED.exe" O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Symantec NetDriver Monitor] C:\PROGRA~1\SYMNET~1\SNDMon.exe O4 - Global Startup: hp psc 1000 series.lnk = ? Welcome to TSF.
Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should not have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below. Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that Display the contents of System Folders' is checked. Windows XP's search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that Search system folders, Search hidden files and folders, and Search subfolders are checked. For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep). Turn off system restore by right clicking on My Computer and go to Properties->System Restore and check the box for Turn off System Restore. Click Apply and then OK. Restart your computer. After we are finished with your log file and verified that it's clean, you may turn it back on and create a new restore point. Reboot into Safe Mode (hit F8 key until menu shows up). Make sure to close any open browsers. Go into HijackThis->Config->Misc. Tools->Open process manager. Select the following and click Kill process for each one if they are still listed (they shouldn't be - but double check it): C:\WINDOWS\mmups.exe Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any): O1 - Hosts: 69.20.16.183 auto.search.msn.com O1 - Hosts: 69.20.16.183 search.netscape.com O1 - Hosts: 69.20.16.183 ieautosearch O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [mediamotor.exe] C:\WINDOWS\mmups.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SESync] "C:\Program Files\SED\SED.exe" O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {08B0E5C0-4FCB-11CF-AAA5-00401C608501} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\msjava.dll (file missing) O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Sun Java Console - {08B0E5C0-4FCB-11CF-AAA5-00401C608501} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\msjava.dll (file missing) Delete the following Files/Folders (delete folders if no filename is specified) according to their directory (if none, just do a search for them) and delete them if they exist: C:\WINDOWS\mmups.exe C:\Program Files\SED\ Reboot into Normal Mode and post a new HijackThis log file so we can make sure it's clean. To help prevent future spyware installations/infections, please read the Anti-Spyware Section and use the tools provided.

http://download.broadbandmedic.com/ First click on "Scan for hosts". The only host file that should be present in your system is the one located in "C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\host" Delete any other host file if present. Then click on "reset default" . then....... Run HJT again and check to see if those details are there, if they are checkmark them and have them fixed: O1 - Hosts: 69.20.56.3 O1 - Hosts: 69.20.16.183 auto.search.msn.com O1 - Hosts: 69.20.16.183 search.netscape.com O1 - Hosts: 69.20.16.183 ieautosearch Post a new log.

Still there. I deleted one host (c:\I386\host) and reset the default, ran Hijack and deleted the four but they reappeared in short order (although not quite immediately). :P [There also seem to be four of them now - there only used to be three...]

Do me a favor and post your log using these directions. Don't put it thru the Analyzer right now.
Please download HijackThis. Create a folder at C:\HJT and move HijackThis.exe there. Run a scan and save the log file. Post the whole log file here.

The Hosts File Reader only turns up the standard(?) file [windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts].
I did a normal windows search for *hosts*, making sure it checked hidden/system folders and whatnot and got: HostsFileReader.exe c:\documents and settings\[username1]\desktop\malware fixes hostsfilesreader.exe download.broadbandmedic (download.broadband.medic.com) hosts[1].gif c:\documents and settings\[username2]\local settings\temporary internet files\content.ie5\exlti4mp lmhosts.sam c:\I386 hostsfilereader.exe-2725667A.pf c:\windows\prefetch hostsfilereader.exe-290e55c7.pf c:\windows\prefetch hostsfilereader[1].exe-2cd01884.pf c:\windows\prefetch hosts c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc lmhosts.sam c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc hosts.sam c:\program files\earthlink setup\windows\config\eln98.cab lmhosts.sam c:\program files\earthlink setup\windows\config\eln98.cab hosts.sam c:\program files\earthlink setup\windows\config\eln98se.cab lmhosts.sam c:\program files\earthlink setup\windows\config\eln98se.cab If there is another way to look let me know. |

This has a low probability of working, but we haven't done it yet, so we need to do it.
Open the HostFileReader and click on "Reset Default". Reboot and post a new, complete HJT log. |

Sorry for the delay. We've had problems with the cable part of our cable-DSL; had to call in the repair person (unrelated problem).

Just posting this back up to the top, as well a bit of an update. I've installed Zonealarm which has at least enabled me to use the computer without it going haywire, although it hasn't removed the problems (but it does seem to be stable enough that it is not getting actively worse - I hope).
There seem to be two major persistent programs (although there may well be others but these two are the worst and most obvious). 1) VX2 - is identified by ad aware as existing, particularly iuosoe.dll (in windows\system32) and pbrorw.exe (apparently a constant running and hidden .exe - also in windows\system32). These can only be seen in the Command Prompt (they actively hide themselves in windows - I've seen the .exe disappear before my eyes when I caught it unawares). These two files cannot be removed, either by the scan programs, nor manually at the methods I can manage (through the Command Prompt), so I assume there's something hidden deeper that none of the scans even recognize. (Which is to say, the files can be removed temporarily but appear soon afterwards at the next reboot, or perhaps even before the reboot.) 2) EliteBar - a far more obvious program, it doesn't hide its outward appearance in explorer but it is just as hard to get rid of, even though the scans recognize it - it seems to be an annoying toolbar for internet explorer. Can only be removed temporarily. Here's my latest Hijack log, unanalyzed: Logfile of HijackThis v1.98.2 Scan saved at 8:51:02 AM, on 12/4/2004 Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600) MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP2 (6.00.2900.2180) Running processes: C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccSetMgr.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\SNDSrvc.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\SPBBC\SPBBCSvc.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccEvtMgr.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exe C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\AOL\ACS\acsd.exe C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\navapsvc.exe C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\IWP\NPFMntor.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\CCPD-LC\symlcsvc.exe C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ZoneLabs\vsmon.exe C:\WINDOWS\wanmpsvc.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\rundll32.exe C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE C:\WINDOWS\system32\igfxtray.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\hkcmd.exe C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_03\bin\jusched.exe C:\Program Files\CyberLink\PowerDVD\DVDLauncher.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\dla\tfswctrl.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Sonic\Update Manager\sgtray.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccApp.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\wuauclt.exe C:\Program Files\MUSICMATCH\Musicmatch Jukebox\mmtask.exe C:\Program Files\Zone Labs\ZoneAlarm\zlclient.exe C:\Program Files\Digital Line Detect\DLG.exe C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\Digital Imaging\bin\hpohmr08.exe C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\Digital Imaging\bin\hpotdd01.exe C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\kitpth.exe C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\Digital Imaging\bin\hpoevm08.exe C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\HPZipm12.exe C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\Digital Imaging\Bin\hpoSTS08.exe C:\HJT\HijackThis.exe R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://www.dell4me.com/myway R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cust...search/ie.html R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cust.../www.yahoo.com R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.yahoo.com/ R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cust.../www.yahoo.com R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cust.../www.yahoo.com R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cust.../www.yahoo.com O2 - BHO: &EliteBar - {28CAEFF3-0F18-4036-B504-51D73BD81ABC} - C:\WINDOWS\EliteToolBar\EliteToolBar.dll O3 - Toolbar: &EliteBar - {825CF5BD-8862-4430-B771-0C15C5CA8DEF} - C:\WINDOWS\EliteToolBar\EliteToolBar.dll O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [IgfxTray] C:\WINDOWS\system32\igfxtray.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HotKeysCmds] C:\WINDOWS\system32\hkcmd.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_03\bin\jusched.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [DVDLauncher] "C:\Program Files\CyberLink\PowerDVD\DVDLauncher.exe" O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [PCMService] "C:\Program Files\Dell\Media Experience\PCMService.exe" O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [dla] C:\WINDOWS\system32\dla\tfswctrl.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UpdateManager] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Sonic\Update Manager\sgtray.exe" /r O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ccApp] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccApp.exe" O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Symantec NetDriver Monitor] C:\PROGRA~1\SYMNET~1\SNDMon.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [mmtask] C:\Program Files\MUSICMATCH\Musicmatch Jukebox\mmtask.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [kalvsys] C:\windows\system32\kalvvbs32.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Zone Labs Client] "C:\Program Files\Zone Labs\ZoneAlarm\zlclient.exe" O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Symantec NetDriver Monitor] C:\PROGRA~1\SYMNET~1\SNDMon.exe O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MSMSGS] "C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe" /background O4 - Global Startup: America Online 9.0 Tray Icon.lnk = C:\Program Files\America Online 9.0\aoltray.exe O4 - Global Startup: Digital Line Detect.lnk = ?
