Please Help! Panda is at 28% way past scanning 1054378 files and has been running since I got off work yesterday at 4:40 PM (Fri) and now it is 11:15AM (Sat) So far it has found nothing.

I am losing MAJOR memory! I had to delete some programs just to have 150mb to run Panda! I'm not real computer literate, but I can follow directions pretty good.

Should I stop Panda and go onto the next steps? Don't know if I'll have enough MB to do anything...everytime I reboot... it goes down to 0!

Something seems to be eating up the memory. I don't do games or anything only email and web searches...I'm a Grandma! HELP!

I have Windows XP Professional SP2 (3 would not install the other day)
1 G HD / 512 MB Ram

My virus protection is Kaspersky and is is up to date

I've stopped Panda ... Going on to the other Steps.

Did steps 3 and 4 without incident.

Step 5:

Finally got it to start, but would not finish. It did install the Hijack this onto my Desktop. So I ran it. Here are the results: (Maybe this will tell us something?)

Re: Can't get Past Step 2

Hello and Welcome to TSF. Sorry you had trouble.

Please Subscribe to this Thread to get immediate notification of replies as soon as they are posted. To do this click Thread Tools, then click Subscribe to this Thread. Make sure it is set to Instant notification by email, then click Add Subscription.

Please save this page to Notepad in order to assist you when carrying out the following instructions.

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and Save it to your Desktop. Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.
  1. Close all applications and windows.
  2. Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  3. When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt <-this one will be minimized
  4. Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt here.
  5. Please attach extra.txt to your post.
To attach a file to a new post, simply
  1. Click the Manage Attachments button under Additional Options > Attach Files on the post composition page, and
  2. Copy and Paste the following into the Upload File from your Computer box:
    C:\Deckard\System Scanner\extra.txt
  3. Click Upload
What DSS will do:
  • create a new System Restore point in Windows XP and Vista.
  • clean your Temporary Files, Downloaded Program Files, and Internet Cache Files, and also empty the Recycle Bin on all drives.
  • check some important areas of your system and produce a report for your analyst to review. DSS automatically runs HijackThis for you, but it will also install and place a shortcut to HijackThis on your desktop if you do not already have HijackThis installed.
------------------------------------------------------

Please post the following in your next reply:

main.txt
an attached extra.txt

Re: Can't get Past Step 2

Sorry for the late reply, but my computer is now hopeless!

I'm on a friends laptop.

Step 5: Finally got the program downloaded and it to start, but would not finish. It did install the Hijack this onto my Desktop. So I ran it. Here are the results: (Maybe this will tell us something?)

Sorry for the late reply, but my computer is now hopeless!
Please explain in detail what you mean by hopeless. What can't you do now? What can you still do on the computer?

Re: Can't get Past Step 2

Every time I try to get online my computer says memory is low.

I was deleting programs to run stuff (such as in step 2) Panda required at least 150 mb to run and I didn't have it. Once it tried to run for 24 hours while I was waiting someone to get back I rebooted and was back to less than 100 mb available. So I had to delete more stuff (like adobe acrobat) to go onto steps 3, 4 & 5.

Now, on top of that my modem has decided to quit too. But I am working on getting a new one.

I am only online talking to you by the Grace of a Friend's computer.

(I take it the read out didn't tell you anything)
I figure I have a virus or worm or something that is gobbling the memory? That is my best guess. How do I test my theory and recover from it?

Re: Can't get Past Step 2

Hello MzDee. Sorry you are having so much trouble.

Your HijackThis log isn't showing anything. You may or may not be infected.

You seem to be having a virtual memory problem.

Do you know how much RAM you have?

Click Start > Run and type dxdiag into the Run box and click OK.

Under System Information, tell me what it says after Memory:

------------------------------------------------------

Has this problem been developing over time, or did it happen all of a sudden?

If it suddenly happened, can you remember when and what happened? Anything specific?

------------------------------------------------------

Have you considered doing a System Restore?

Let's see if Restore Points are available:

Click Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore

You will be presented with a screen that says: Welcome to System Restore

There should be a green dot next to: Restore my computer to an earlier time

Click Next

Click on a date prior to when your problems started. Are restore points available?

Please let me know.

Re: Can't get Past Step 2

Sorry for the delay. Having trouble getting online. I had to delete some more programs in order to try the system restore. My memory available was down to 0!

Anyway running dxdiag: 510 mb RAM

The wasn't anything available on the system restore.

This problem with memory came on all of a sudden..

Are you sure you have a 1 G hard drive? How old is this computer? What is your model number?
