EEK! Spools.exe has killed a Windows 2000 Pro

This all started when asked by a friend to help speed up his computer.

While trying to improve the speed of a Windows 2000 Professional computer, I found multiple copies of Spools.exe running. This took the CPU utilization to 100%.

I deleted what I thought was causing the problem by removing C:\WINNT\System 32\spools.exe

This really messed me up. After re-booting, I am no longer able to execue any program that ends in .exe

The message I get is :"Access to the specified device, path, or file is denied"

This prevents running the AVG software, or installing any anti-virus program.

Any help will be appreciated.

Re: Spools.exe has killed a Windows 2000 Pro

Hi, welcome to tsf!

Download Deckard's System Scanner to your Desktop.

Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.

1. Close all applications and windows.
2. Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
3. When the scan is complete, a text file will open - main.txt.txt<<this one will be maximized and extra.txt <<this one will be minimized.
4. Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt.txt in your next reply.
6. Please copy and paste the contents of main.txt and extra.txt to your post.
