I have done the usual CC cleanups, virus scans, and process checks. I even disabled some of the features on AVG 8.0 free. But my system is still very slow to boot, load browsers and programs, switch screens, and shut down. One thing that drives me crazy is that it always seems to be scanning, turning on fans, and generally chewing on something rather than applying its CPU power to my tasks at hand.

Also I think space might be an issue. My kids have installed software and browser tools that I don't use, but I don't know which programs are redundant and which are best to keep, just in case I need to burn a DVD or want to listen to music. I also resent the constant barrage of MS updates that are filling up my system. Is there a safe way to avoid downloading all those updates.
