Abnormally slow computer that stalls, with new Trend Micro Internet Security
I recently changed my anti-virus from Norton/Symantec to Trend Micro Internet Security because a friend had told me he had success with the latter. However, it required my removing other anti-spyware/anti-malware security that I had installed after trouble with another computer (which I had obtained help with on here). Now, this computer has slowed down until it often seems like it's not responding at all. One particular problem is with iTunes, which not only is sluggish, but also, for the past 2 days, shows a big message that 'iTunes is unable to browse album covers on this computer'.
It looks like some of Norton/Symantec may be still installed, although I have tried to remove it with Add/Remove programs in Control Panel. I ran a Deckard's Scan which gave the following results: Deckard's System Scanner v20071014.68 Run by Charles Livsey on 2008-06-15 22:29:47 Computer is in Normal Mode. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -- System Restore -------------------------------------------------------------- -- Last 5 Restore Point(s) -- 93: 2008-06-16 02:26:30 UTC - RP769 - Deckard's System Scanner Restore Point 92: 2008-06-15 22:51:13 UTC - RP768 - Removed LiveUpdate (Symantec Corporation) 91: 2008-06-15 22:45:30 UTC - RP767 - Removed Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1 90: 2008-06-15 22:44:34 UTC - RP766 - Removed J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 11 89: 2008-06-15 22:43:30 UTC - RP765 - Removed J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10 -- First Restore Point -- 1: 2008-03-18 19:17:44 UTC - RP677 - System Checkpoint Backed up registry hives. Re: Abnormally slow computer that stalls, with new Trend Micro Internet Security
The slowness seems to have something to do with Trend Micro Internet Security 2008, as when I uninstalled it everything was fast again. In talking with technicians at Trend Micro, they said it likely has to do with interference from previously installed anti-virus/anti-malware/spyware programs that were incompletely removed (and which can't be removed completely). Does this seem likely? I tried to re-install TM Internet Security 2008, and now the firewall doesn't work. It may have to do with the previous uninstall not removing the firewall 'drivers' for my wireless and wired network connections. Also, the computer is again slow, though not as bad as before. Do you think it is worth trying to get this working with your or Trend Micro's help, or should I use different anti-virus/anti-malware/anti-spyware programs? If the latter, then which ones?
