Windows Disappear Upon Login

Hello,

My laptop has apparently been infected with a Trojan. Everytime I start Windows it disappears within 5 seconds. If there have been other forums/post about this I am sorry, but I am a n00b and need some detailed help for this. Any help is so very much appreciated.

What should I do?

Windows Disappear Upon Login

Hello,

I think I have some malware on my system. Everytime I restart my laptop windows loads for about 10 seconds and then disappears. I am not very knowledgeable about these things so please break things down into simple terms. I would very much appreciate any help.

Re: Vista Infected with Trojan. Windows Disappears Immediately upon login

Hey mike, when it disappears, press Ctrl+Alt+Delete, click on Task Manager, click on file--->new task--->explorer.exe, the display will come back and u'll c all ur icons, if it goes again, press Ctrl+Alt+Delete, click on Task Manager, click on file--->new task--->regedit.exe
. hit enter.
Registry Editor will open up...
Navigate to
My Computer/HKEY_Local_Machine/Software/Microsoft/Windows NT/Current version,

then click on Winlogon, right hand side, look for the registry value "Shell", double click, empty all the content under value data and type "Explorer.exe"
Close registry editor, open task manager again as before and restart the computer. Let me know if it works otherwise there are few more advanced steps.
Plz do not touch any other registry at all as if now... and ask me if u need any help in naviagting to the registry, i'll let u knw how to replace that registry by creating a ".reg" file and merge it with the rest just by double-clicking on the file.

Re: Vista Infected with Trojan. Windows Disappears Immediately upon login

I am sorry Sean@HP, but we can not give malware removal assistance unless we are properly trained. On another note, you should always back up the registry before editing.

@MikeKnight: Please follow these steps:
IMPORTANT - Read This Before Posting For Malware Removal Help

And post your logs here:
http://www.techsupportforum.com/secu...this-log-help/

Sadly to say, please do not edit anything in the registry until we can get you over to security where they can handle you.

Kind Regards,
Techpro5238

Re: Vista Infected with Trojan. Windows Disappears Immediately upon login

My apologies Techpro5238, but wat i thought, unless we run explorer.exe properly, mike will find it difficult to run hijack this and get the log...he mentioned he's a newbie... i was not through the complete TS yet... however i respect wat u say and agree with it.... By the way, i'm a technician and properly trained in malware removal... Sorry mike, he's right, follow wat he says...

Re: Vista Infected with Trojan. Windows Disappears Immediately upon login

Thanks for the initial help. I can't complete step 1 because windows will not stay open long enough. I am now running the Panda ActiveScan and will send logs when I am done. Hope to hear from you all soon.

Re: Windows Disappear Upon Login

Hello MIkeKnight42,

What we'd really need to see in order to assist you, is the main.txt from Deckard's System Scanner.

As noted in the final step (Step 5) of our sticky topic IMPORTANT - Read This Before Posting For Malware Removal Help....

Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop.

What DSS will do:
  • create a new System Restore point in Windows XP and Vista.
  • clean your Temporary Files, Downloaded Program Files, and Internet Cache Files, and also empty the Recycle Bin on all drives.
  • check some important areas of your system and produce a report for your analyst to review.
  • DSS automatically runs HijackThis for you, but it will also install and place a shortcut to HijackThis on your desktop if you do not already have HijackThis installed.

**Note** If Windows will not stay loaded long enough to run the tool, boot into Safe Mode to run it.

You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.
  1. Close all applications and windows.
  2. Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  3. When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt <-this one will be minimized
  4. Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt in your next reply.
  5. Please attach extra.txt to your post.
To attach a file to a new post, simply
  1. Click the[Manage Attachments] button under Additional Options > Attach Files on the post composition page, and
  2. copy and paste the following into the "Upload File from your Computer" box:
    C:\Deckard\System Scanner\extra.txt
  3. Click Upload.

Please include the following in your next reply:

main.txt
an attached extra.txt

My Windows disappears everytime I start my system. I believe I updated to Service Pack 2 when I had malware on my system. Here is the Deckard log. I am unable to sent the "extra.exe" file as an attachment, the pop-up attachment window never loads. Please advise.

Re: Windows Disappear Upon Login

I've merged the threads once again. Let's stay in this one to keep all info together.

This will require more than one round to properly eradicate. Please stay with me until given the 'all clear' even if symptoms seemingly abate.

Please copy this page to Notepad and save to your desktop for reference as you will not have any browsers open while you are carrying out portions of these instructions.

It's IMPORTANT to carry out the instructions in the sequence listed below.

***************************************************

Download Combofix from any of the links below, and save it to your desktop.

Link 1
Link 2

**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

--------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Close any open browsers.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. If you are unsure how to do this, please see this link http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt along with a new HijackThis log for further review.

Re: Windows Disappear Upon Login

Hi Ried,

It seems Combofix has restored Windows like you said. I will wait to hear from you before I make any changes. I have re-enabled my virus protection (Windows One Care). Please let me know if you need anything else. Here is my ComboFix log. Thanks so much for your time.
