Problems with Symantec Anti-Virus...Please Help!

I recently got through a number of problems with my computer and I think it may have affected my Symantec Anti-Virus that is provided by my university through student technology fees. The problem is that whenever I click scan in the right-hand menu, it used to offer me a list of places that I COULD scan, now it shows nothing and I usually get "Symantec Anti-Virus has encountered a problem and needs to close" type message. I tried reinstalling and the problem persists. Anyone experienced with this software, please help! Does this mean that I am no longer protected if it is acting this way? I cannot scan anything, and I have a scheduled scan every night but I'm not sure if they are even working due to the malfunction. Anyway, any kind of help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

What version do you have?

We can uninstall it and you can download AVG, which is free and far superior.
