Well...although you had some spyware issues I don't think this is attributed to your shutdown issues. The temps your reporting are WAY to HIGH and your bios shutdown temp warning or the CPU reaching MAX temp is powering the PC off to prevent CPU damage which may have already occured. You reported a temp of 210F which is 98C. No CPU (Athlon/INtel) should run at 60C MAX or above and the Athlon series meltdown temp (damage point) is 85C. If it does you have a cooling issue with either the heatsink is not seated, fan has quit...ect.

While the temp probe can be bad and report an incorrect temp it WON'T power the PC off unless you have set a shutdown temp in the bios. If you enter the bios and have this setting disable it. If it then powers off again...you have a cooling issue and CPU problem that needs addressed. You said your friend had a simular issue fixed by a reformat...but was he getting extreamly high temps like you?

For whatever reason, I couldn't get the Panda scan to work on any of my browsers (it recommended restarting). ravantivirus is still scanning so I don't want to do that, yet. So far, the scan found this: D:\WINDOWS\system32\config\systemprofile\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\2DWNO7SV\WksPatch[2].exe - Win32/HLLW.Nachi.B.dam#2 -> Infected.

I'll see what else it finds. Also, my friend never got around to measuring CPU temperature, he gave up very quickly. I will disable the autoshutdown feature in the BIOS (if I can find it...I have an Asus P4C800 Deluxe BIOS1017) and see if it still shuts down on me.

Also, I have reverted to a System Restore point before I installed F-Prot, so I currently only have one Anti-Virus program installed.

I'm feeling a bit lost here.

If your temps are going up, the scans will probably spike the temps before they can finsih; they are pretty intensive resource users..

Apparently, Panda found something; did you have Panda fix it?

I don't know the history of your past computer use, but this could easily be a wild goose chase, in that you can have both infection and hardware failure at the same time.

So...

Since I have never heard of an infection that raised CPU temps as part of it's symptoms or even as a "side effect" of the infection (and I have seen a lot of infections), I think that the first thing that you need to do is correct that heat problem. You will then be able to accomplish a complete virus scan and auto-repair, and we can tell which symptoms are from what.

Let us know your plans!

Is it possible that my CPU still functions after reaching temperatures of 110C? Last night I ran a virus scan until my computer powered off, monitoring the temperature...and right around when it got to 110C it shut off. Do you agree that 110C is way too high to be an accurate temperature reading? Is it possible that a virus could affect the temperature readout and not the temperature itself?

I will try to do a Windows repair installation, a reformat, and if those things don't fix it I will go ahead and get a new heat sink and/or fan.

I can't get Panda or Symantec online virus cans to work (even though I followed all the required/suggested steps in order to do so). I used Ravantivirus and it found a few unharmful viruses (which it didn't/couldn't fix) and I removed them myself. I have to pick and choose which folders to scan, however, because a full scan inevitably results in a power down. So I don't know if the virus is hiding out somewhere I forgot to look.

My System

110c doesnt seem too hot to be a real temp.

also, have you tried the virus scan at www.trendmicro.com ?

Just to update, I ran the Windows Install Repair from the CD and doing so had no effect on my temps. I'm starting to doubt that it's anything but a hardware problem. I guess it looks like I"ll be installing a new cooling mechanism and hoping for the best. Thanks for the help.

Sorry to say but a virus or adware/spyware will NOT effect a temp reading by the bios probe. Your only luck...would be a malfunctioning temp probe (which isn't common)110C is VERY HOT...and most likely the CPU is now damaged as I noted the meltdown temps (Point at which damage occures) in a earlier thread.
