XP Freezes at Startup! Here's my HJT Log. HELP?!?!?
Here's the situation:
My computer freezes after about 15 seconds after windows xp loads. I can start in safe mode and it runs fine. I ran an HJT log and someone from another forum told me I was full of spyware. From safe mode I loaded and ran AdAware, CWShredder and Spybot from both administrator and my personal user logon, but to no avail. It still freezes in about 15 seconds after Windows XP loads. I wasn't able to get the most current definitions by updating because I can only operate in Safe Mode, and so no internet. (Is there some other way to do it?) I ran another log from highjackthis for each logon, but the list didn't seem to get any shorter, even though adaware found 69 items and I removed them. Anyway, here they are... Administrator: Logfile of HijackThis v1.98.2 Scan saved at 2:49:47 PM, on 10/18/2004 Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600) MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP2 (6.00.2900.2180) Running processes: C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE C:\hjt\HijackThis.exe R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.emachines.com/ R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://www.emachines.com R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://minisearch.startnow.com/ R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://minisearch.startnow.com/ R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://minisearch.startnow.com/ R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.startnow.com/ R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,Default_Search_URL = http://minisearch.startnow.com/ R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = http://minisearch.startnow.com/ R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch = http://minisearch.startnow.com/ O2 - BHO: Yahoo! Hello-
I understand your problem. I have two theories about the source of your problem. 1) DELDIR0.exe is somehow causing it. 2) You have the documented SP2 / TV_Media conflict. I do not know for sure that the TV_MEDIA conflict is your problem. So lets tackle DELDIR0 first. Lets address him first, them move on to the Recovery Console, if needed. Please follow my instructions below. Here is the documentation on the SP2 / TV MEDIA conflict, if you wish to read it. ---------------------------------------------------------------- SP2 and TV MEDIA conflict I you plan to upgrade to Service Pack 2 (SP2) and you have the TV_Media spyware on your system, you will get caught in a crash / reboot endless cycle. Three solutions. 1) Remove TV_Media before installing SP2. 2) Go to the above windowsupdate website and install Critical Update 885523. Then proceed with your SP2 update. Remove TV_Media. 3) If you have already gotten caught in the vicious cycle, then you will need to login in Safe Mode. Use Recovery Console to remove SP2. Remove TV_Media. Reinstall SP2. For more info see http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=885523 Please do not do anything with Recovery Console and SP2 yet. ---------------------------------------------------------------- Reboot in Safe Mode instructions. During reboot, tap the F8 key. Select Safe Mode. ---------------------------------------------------------------- To show hidden files instructions Doubleclick My Computer | Tools | Folder Options | View tab Select Show Hidden Files and Folders Uncheck Hide extensions for known file types Uncheck Hide protected operating system files (Recommended) Select Apply to All Folders | Yes | Apply | OK ---------------------------------------------------------------- Turn off System Restore instructions Rightclick My Computer | Properties | System Restore | check “Turn off System Restore”, <Apply>, <OK>. Reboot. After we are finished with your log file and verified that it’s clean, you may turn it back on and create a new restore point. ---------------------------------------------------------------- Open HiJackThis | Config | Misc Tools | Open process manager. Select the following and click <Kill process> for each one if they are still listed (they may not be, and that's ok): DrgToDsc.exe igfxtray.exe jusched.exe realsched.exe DELDIR0.EXE BigFix.exe ---------------------------------------------------------------- Uninstall the following (from Start | Settings | Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs) if they exist: TV_MEDIA ---------------------------------------------------------------- Open HiJackThis | Scan, Put a check next to the following items. no luck...
Detah,
I followed your instructions to the "t", but it didn't keep it from freezing after startup. TV Media was not anywhere on my computer. I did delete DELDIR0.exe. Anyway, here's my new HJT log. Hi
You still have some issues that need addressed. Go to My Computer->Tools->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that Show hidden files and folders is enabled. Also make sure that the System Files and Folders are showing/visible also. Turn off system restore by right clicking on My Computer and go to Properties->System Restore and check the box for Turn off System Restore. Reboot into Safe Mode (hit F8 key until menu shows up). Make sure to close any open browsers. Open add/remove programs and remove both Myway/Mybar and HyperBar if listed. Check and fix the following in HijackThis if they still exist (make sure you do not miss an entry) R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://minisearch.startnow.com/ R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://minisearch.startnow.com/ R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = http://minisearch.startnow.com/ R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch = http://minisearch.startnow.com/ R3 - URLSearchHook: HyperSearchHook - {7923DECA-2FD5-40CD-8605-6389932CB9BB} - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Hyperbar\HyperbarSS3.dll O2 - BHO: myBar BHO - {0494D0D1-F8E0-41ad-92A3-14154ECE70AC} - C:\Program Files\MyWay\myBar\1.bin\MYBAR.DLL O3 - Toolbar: &SearchBar - {0494D0D9-F8E0-41ad-92A3-14154ECE70AC} - C:\Program Files\MyWay\myBar\1.bin\MYBAR.DLL Delete the following Files/Folders in RED (delete folders if no filename is specified) according to their directory (If you can't find them...do a search for them) C:\Program Files\Common Files\Hyperbar\HyperbarSS3.dll C:\Program Files\MyWay\myBar\1.bin\MYBAR.DLL In safe mode navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder. Go to Start > Run and type %temp% in the Run box. The Temp folder will open. Click Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder. Finally go to Control Panel > Internet Options. On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files". Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK. Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button. Click Apply then OK. Once done reboot into Normal Mode and post a new HijackThis log file to confirm what was removed and if it's clean or not. Once your clean you can enable system restore again. If you can not enter normal mode and it freezes again please explain when this begun. Right after a hardware change..or software install?? Your freeze may or maynot be due to some spyware but a driver issue as it works fine in safe mode.

Please follow my colleague's advice above. Thank you MB.
Also, uninstall the following (from Start | Settings | Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs) if they exist: My Search Bar MyWay Speed Bar MyWebSearch or My Web Search Bar Fun Web Products Easy Installer ---------------------------------------------------------------- I think we might have an invisible badguy on here. After you have completed MB's steps and my steps above, please download Startdreck, post a startdreck log and a new HJT log. Startdreck is a program that reveals hidden startup programs and hidden running programs. The startdreck log will show us _everything_. The HJT log will show us what has changed since the last fixes. ---------------------------------------------------------------- Startdreck instructions (396 bytes) Download StartDreck (written by Nikolaus Rameis) from http://www.niksoft.at/download/startdreck.htm This program makes invisible and super-invisible files visible.

MicroBell and Detah,
Ok, everything's removed and "fixed." However, it's still freezing at startup. I went ahead and deleted the "Startnow" folder, because I couldn't get windows to uninstall "Startnow navigation helper". Also, I realized that I had made a change to the startup menu before I posted my first hjt log. I re-checked all the items on my startup menu and ran a new hjt log, as well as a startdreck log. I leave my computer on all the time, and I sat down to work, and it was frozen. I restarted, everything worked fine. Then it happened again a few days later, and so I restarted and it froze immediately after windows loaded, about 15 seconds after all the icons on the desktop changed from generic to specific icons. Then I posted on this site. I haven't changed any hardware recently, but I did get new memory, a new graphics card, and a new mouse about two months ago. But those installed fine, and no problems till last week. Software, on the other hand... I've been sharing and downloading files and installing software fairly regularly the past few months. I expect this is the root of the problem, but I'll let you be the judge of that. Thanks again for all your help, -Jess Last edited by Jess Robbins : 10-21-2004 at 09:57 AM. |

There is nothing terrible in your log. Nothing that can cause autoreboots. But I have several suspicions.
I am leaning towards MicroBell's driver solution. It is quite possible that during one of your recent installations, a driver has been corrupted. I cannot explain how that would lead to autoreboots. That is what is puzzling me. So I am going to focus elsewhere first. Could you please list the programs that you installed in the last 10 days. I may have you reinstall several core drivers later, but lets see if a specific program is at fault first. To check on this, open Windows Explorer, highlight c:, <search>, <all files and folders>, under all or part of the file name, enter *.*, under Type of file, select Folder, click <Search>. Wait until it finishes...could be a bit...then click Sort Results by Category, click Date Modified, now in the right hand window, click on Type at the top of the column. Search down the list to find only the Folders. Look for the most recent folders. This should give you a good idea which programs have been installed recently. Please state only the ones that have been installed since you noticed the problem. |

I'm not sure of the MAX file attachment size on this board....but go to start...run..type in msinfo32. Once thats loaded..click file...export and save the file as a text file. Attach that (as a file attachment) to your next post. (DON'T copy and paste it'
s contents) as it may be a big file 300KB+ and will look like gibberish if pasted here. On another throught...enter msconfig and disable windowblinds on the startup process. See if that stops the lockup. Some corrupt themes will lock XP once loaded.

fixed?
i haven't had a chance to do the latest things in this thread, but I did get my computer to stop freezing! I took a buddy's advice and ran Docmemory http://www.simmtester.com/page/produ...c/download.asp
and it failed the memory test in one way or another. I'm still deciphering the results. But I read in one of the other threads on this site that sometimes with memory trouble you can just pull out the memory and put it back in and it'll fix itself. So I did it, and it worked! No more freeze at startup, and my programs that require big memory still work. But I ran the docmemory again and it failed again. So I'm trying to figure out exactly why that is. Any ideas? So should I still post the program stuff/msinfo stuff? |
