High Explorer memory usage! - HJT log file

Hi everyone!

Very strange Explorer behaviour on this PC I'm trying to fix. First, I have already scanned Win Xp with: CWShredder, Ad-Aware 6, Spybot, NAV with updated definitions and Panda Antivirus online scan. Each one of these found something bad, spyware, trojan, viruses....(NAV found 140 infected files then Panda found another 30....). Also "hosts" file was "dirty" and has been cleaned up. I have also disabled some unknown services running on start-up.
But still, after all that, XP would have a 250mb memory usage at startup idle!
What's more when browsing folders or searching for files Explorer memory usage will boost up to 150 mb sometimes causing a "Virtual Memory" alert message!

I tried to install SP2 and system seems to run fine, but the Explorer issue isnt solved.

Here's my HJT log file:

Hi
Close your browser window, run hjt in safe mode and fix these items.Any files/folders that I have highlighted will also need to be removed from your hard drive as well as from the log. Make sure to have your system set to show hidden files and folders.. www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html while still in safe mode, run "CWshreader".Post a new log when finished....

Let's see if this doesn't help out a bit...

Open a new HJT log and check all of the below to be fixed:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7B55BB05-0B4D-44fd-81A6-B136188F5DEB} - C:\WINDOWS\questmod-1.dll
O13 - WWW Prefix:
O13 - Home Prefix:
O13 - Mosaic Prefix:
O13 - FTP Prefix:
O13 - Gopher Prefix:

Then, with all browser windows closed, click "fix checked".

Reboot and post a new log.

The HJT log is clean. This doesn't absolutely mean that you do not have something malicious running, but it means that it is very unlikely.

The entries that you asked about are all legit. Whether they are necessary to you, I cannot decide.

Are you having any problems other than CPU usage? Frankly, in the grand scheme of things, you do not have that many running processes, so I'm not inclined to tell you to start turning things off.

You can "live" with your process manager for a few days and see what the hogs are, look them up and decide if you want to turn off or elliminate some. Be a bit careful there, as the interdependencies can come back to bite you.

If there are no other symptoms, I doubt we can blame malware, now.
