OS: Windows XP SP2

User and Sytem setting missing

Since I am unable to send you a log, please accept the basic info.

WinBook Laptop, Turion 64, running Windows XP with Sp2 and all updates as of 08/17/07 when incident occured. Windows resides in C:\WINXP.

My system suddenly lost the PST file for Outlook. I tried searching for it and it was not to be found. I re-booted the system and after entering my login and password received a popup indicating that my personal settings could not be found and the default settings would be loaded which brought me to a blank blue desktop with only the recycle bin. Clicking on the start button revealed no programs either including explorer. It did show Control Panel, Printers, etc.

Explorer, IE6, fails to retain its settings, but rather keeps reverting to settings that hide files and folders, including desktop folder.

Explorer will not allow downloads, but does allow uploads. Hence I could not scan my PC as instructed in step 2. When I clicked on Scan PC at the Panda Software site, a popup came up with SKYPE Ad>on page. I could not perform steps 3 or 4 either for the same reasons.

I tried using Restore Point, since I had a recent restore point only a few hours before the incident. It behaved normally and went through its gyrations, but when the system rebooted I received the same results.

BTW, none of the programs listed in Step 1 where on the PC.

Re: User and Sytem setting missing

Hi mewzicguy and welcome to TSF

Sorry for the delay in getting to you, the forum has been really busy lately and all our helpers are volunteers.

Click Start > Run and type cleanmgr.exe select drive C:\ and click OK. In the disk cleanup window make sure you check the following then click OK.
  • Temporary Internet Files
  • Recycle Bin
  • Temporary Files

------------------------

Delete your Internet Explorer cookies, Tools > Internet Options on the General tab click Delete cookies and press ok and ok.

------------------------

After cleaning temp files and cookies are you able to download the following program

Download Deckard's System Scanner to your Desktop. Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.
  1. Close all applications and windows.
  2. Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  3. When the scan is complete, 2 text files will open - main.txt and extra.txt
  4. Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt back in this thread (do not attach it).
  5. Please attach extra.txt to your post.

To attach a file to a new post, simply
  1. Click the[Manage Attachments] button under Additional Options > Attach Files on the post composition page, and
  2. copy and paste the following into the "Upload File from your Computer" box:
    C:\Deckard\System Scanner\extra.txt
  3. Click Upload.

What DSS will do:
  • create a new System Restore point in Windows XP and Vista.
  • clean your Temporary Files, Downloaded Program Files, and Internet Cache Files, and also empty the Recycle Bin on all drives.
  • check some important areas of your system and produce a report for your analyst to review. DSS automatically runs HijackThis for you, but it will also install and place a shortcut to HijackThis on your desktop if you do not already have HijackThis installed.

------------------------

If your still unable to download DSS let me know if you have access to a clean computer for downloading and do the following:

From Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs take note of everything in the list and post them in your next reply.

------------------------

Please also provide an update on system behaviour and details of any problems you may have encountered while following instructions
