Need help (brother's computer)

My brother is having some problems with his DVD drive. It doesn't read or recognize any kind of disk. It's been reformatted, firmware upgraded, all that jazz. The only thing that hasn't been done is replacing the drive itself. He talked to Sony (it's a Sony laptop) and they said it could be a virus that is stopping the drive form working (yeah I know - a virus is always the culprit, right? ). But we figure we might as well try everything before buying a new drive. He ran norton and only had 2 viruses and they weren't the problem. I have attached a Hijack this log for examination. Thanks in advance!

Re: Need help (brother's computer)

Hi RyanB95,

There are no signs of malware present your HiJackThis log. Lets put your computer up against an online virus scan to see if anything is hiding. Is this laptop brand new, or old? How many years have you had this laptop for? Sometimes the lasers burn out on these drives through wear and tear. Check to see if its still covered under warranty.

Perform an online scan with Internet Explorer with Panda ActiveScan
  1. Click on located at the bottom of the page.
  2. A "pop up" window will appear. * Please ensure that your pop up blocker doesn't block it *
  3. Enter your e-mail address, country, and state & click "Free Online Scan" * The download of the 8 MB Panda's ActiveX control will take place *
Begin the scan by selecting
  • If it finds any malware, it will offer you a report.
  • Please ignore any entry it finds and the offer to buy the program to remove the entry, as we will address this later.
  • Click on then click
* You needn't remain online while it's doing the scan but you have to re-connect after it has finished to see the report.
* Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

Re: Need help (brother's computer)

Thanks for the reply. The laptop is a 2 year old Sony VAIO. The warranty just ran out the other week. I would imagine the laser is worn out too. I'll run the online virus scans asap. Thanks for the reply!

Re: Need help (brother's computer)

Why does everything have to break just before the warranty is about to expire!? That's usually the case with computers :(
