i think it is a virus stoping me from scanning my system, can anyone help me fix this problem?

Kinda sounds like Sasser, but that symptom covers several virii.

Try doing an online scan at:

Have you tried (if able) to boot into Safe Mode and run your scan? Some AV programs don't like Safe Mode, but Norton will work there.

Other than the online suggestion, McAfee makes a good little AV program called Stinger you can download and try. It targets a 'more recent' subset of virii and can be run from a floppy disk, if necessary.

A few other things to try:

- Uninstalling and re-installing Ad-Aware.
- Using XP Recovery Console to Repair your installation.
- Installing/Running SpyBot before Ad-Aware.

If there's any more detail you can give on the specific text of the error message, that may help as well.
