Hi,

You mentioned earlier that the computer crashes predictably when you try to burn CD's. I could be way off base here as I am not a Windows XP registry expert, but given that even slaving your drive to another computer caused that computer to crash, these entries may be the cause:

When you logged in, Windows loaded your user profile as HKCU & then scans the machine for these drives.

MountPoints2 pertains to mapped drives; media which are assigned a temporary drive letter. Deleting these will not cause any massive system damage as these temporary keys gets rebuilt everytime Windows starts.

If you're interested, here's the regfix to take those out: (note, this will not delete your F:\bootcd\wintools\autorun.exe it will only clear that mountpoint for now)

Open notepad and copy/paste the entire text in the quotebox below: (don't forget to copy and paste REGEDIT4)

Save the file as "delete.reg". Make sure to save it with the quotes. Choose to "Save type as - All Files"
It should look like this:

Double click on the delete.reg file and choose Yes to merge/add it to the registry. You may delete the file afterwards.

Delete this file:

F:\bootcd\wintools\autorun.exe


Please let me know what issues are remaining.

ok ive done that, but those enteries are actually from the Hiren bootcd when i used it with windows loaded up, so they couldnt have caused the problem in the first place... but i do appreciate the help your giving

yes burning is the only thing that guarantees it freezes, but any other time its completely random on mine.

the other computer (computer 2) however doesnt work at all now. it freezes b4 windows will load up, even if u try it in safe mode. however we have taken the C drive and put it in a third computer and it loaded up just fine for the past 4 days. we also have a copy of Linux on a spare harddrive that is designed to be compatible with all hardware so you can just stick it any computer and it will work, but in computer 2 it freezes during the loading up...

That's what I was trying to get at, admittedly not very clearly.

How sure are you that the bootcd is not corrupted somehow? It may be what messed up the computer you slaved this hdd to. At what point did the other computer mess up--after you logged into Windows from the slaved drive?

because i downloaded the last version of hirens bootcd on my mates computer after mine had kaputt

with the 2nd computer, i put in one of my storage HD as a slave and it loaded up fine, but then when i went to copy the data it froze halfway through. so i rebooted it and its been the same eversince. i havent had that HD in another computer since...

Ok, let's recap a bit here. Is your intent still to do a full reinstall because of the issues described in your first post--and you're hoping to get your important data off that hdd first?

my intent is purely fix the problem without losing my data, if possible of course.

my C drive loads up on another computer fine, as does the 2nd computers.

as i said i have no idea what the problem is, only a hint that its the motherboard thats somehow gone. with the same scenario for computer 2.

Then we are well out of my area here. I'd rather not move this entire thread to the proper forum as it's so long and a lot of the pertinent information may get overlooked.

Since you're suspecting mobo issue, I would suggest posting in the Hardware Section and see if the folks there have any ideas on this issue.

Tell them that you've been cleared from the HijackThis Log help so they don't assume it's malware and send you throught this loop again. Provide them a link to this thread for reference.

cheers bud. i do originally think it was some dodgy thing as thats the only logical way it could be contagious.... anyway ok ill post in the hardware section. thanks again dude for all the time and assistance
