Has anyone had any experience with this Potentially Unwanted Program (not a virus)? Can find no way to remove it. Not even at McAfee?

Please download HijackThis. Create a folder at C:\HJT and move HijackThis.exe there. Run a scan and save the log file. Post the whole log file here. Do not fix anything since most of them listed there are harmless (some are system required). This program will help us determine if there is any spyware/malware on your computer.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. You should not have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that Show hidden files and folders is enabled. Also make sure that the System Files and Folders are showing/visible also.

The Temp folders should be cleaned out periodically as installation programs and hijack programs leave a lot of junk there. Download Index.dat Suite to clean out all the temp folders. Do not run it yet.

Reboot into Safe Mode (hit F8 key until menu shows up).

Make sure to close any open browsers. Go into HijackThis->Config->Misc. Tools->Open process manager. Select the following and click Kill process for each one if they are still listed (they shouldn't be - but double check it):

Check and fix the following in HijackThis if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

Delete the following Files/Folders (delete folders if no filename is specified) according to their directory (if none, just do a search for them) and delete them if they exist:

C:\WINDOWS\addins\pcexp.exe

Run Index.dat Suite now and go to Tools->Settings. Then make sure to check the following: Cookies, History, Recent Documents, Swap File (if you have Windows 95/98), Temporary Internet Files and Temp Files. Click Save at the bottom. Then click on the Find button. Let it search. Then click on the second button on the top. This will generate a batch file. Click Next->Next->Next and it will tell you that after the next reboot/restart you the file should run by itself and startup and clean all those files.

Reboot into Normal Mode and post a new HijackThis log file so we can make sure it's clean.

To help prevent future spyware installations/infections, please read my anti-spyware section and use the tools provided.

Hi - Thank you for your help. It's very much appreciated.
I noticed that there was before and still is another entry in HijackThis for 04-HKLM....Addins\pcexp.exe. That's the bugger that keeps popping up when I run McAfee and the SpyBot and Ad-Aware. I used to also get actask.exe but don't anymore. This is all Vundo stuff by the way.

And one other thing. You told me to check\fix an entry for a shortcut to EmptyTemp.bat. I did check\fix it but this is a batch file I put in my startup. Is it ok that I put it back in there or should I not run this for some reason?

This was a vundo problem. Did McAfee, spybot, & ad-aware scans...pcexp.exe is gone but now McAfee says I have A0034530.exe???

Run an online virus scan at TrendMicro or RAV Antivirus. Select the Autoclean option if you use TrendMicro.

Regarding the bat file, I wasn't sure if this was created by a program or not. If you created it, then you may keep it. It's safe in this case.

You should not have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below. Go to My Computer->Tools->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that Show hidden files and folders is enabled. Also make sure that the System Files and Folders are showing/visible also. The Temp folders should be cleaned out periodically as installation programs and hijack programs leave a lot of junk there. Download Index.dat Suite to clean out all the temp folders. Do not run it yet. Reboot into Safe Mode (hit F8 key until menu shows up). Make sure to close any open browsers. Go into HijackThis->Config->Misc. Tools->Open process manager. I noticed that there was before and still is another entry in HijackThis for 04-HKLM....Addins\pcexp.exe. That's the bugger that keeps popping up when I run McAfee and the SpyBot and Ad-Aware. I used to also get actask.exe but don't anymore. This is all Vundo stuff by the way. And one other thing. You told me to check\fix an entry for a shortcut to EmptyTemp.bat. I did check\fix it but this is a batch file I put in my startup.
