Long boot, slow internet, freezes up
Hi, I recently posted this thread previously but did not receive a responce after a couple of weeks; I did reply with bump too. Here is the details of my old post:
Hello, I have been helped here numerous times here before and am now trying to clean up my dad's pc. It's a Dell with a 2 ghz P4 processor, 256mb of RAM, and plenty of room on the hd. It is running Windows XP and has all updates. This computer takes at least 10 minutes to boot up and load all the programs; I understand this has some relation to Norton, but the pc's performance is decreasing. Web browsing is very slow and sometimes sites don't even open. I often have to close and re-open my browser to load a page. All help is greatly appreciated!! Thanks! Here's my log: Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1 Scan saved at 11:22:06 PM, on 1/3/2007 Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600) MSIE: Internet Explorer v7.00 (7.00.5730.0011) Running processes: C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccSetMgr.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccEvtMgr.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccProxy.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\SNDSrvc.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\SPBBC\SPBBCSvc.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\LEXBCES.EXE C:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\LEXPPS.EXE C:\Program Files\Symantec\LiveUpdate\ALUSchedulerSvc.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\cisvc.exe C:\Program Files\ewido anti-spyware 4.0\guard.exe C:\Program Files\Norton SystemWorks\Norton GoBack\GBPoll.exe C:\Program Files\Norton Internet Security\Norton AntiVirus\navapsvc.exe C:\PROGRA~1\NORTON~3\NORTON~2\NPROTECT.EXE C:\WINDOWS\system32\nvsvc32.exe C:\PROGRA~1\NORTON~3\NORTON~2\SPEEDD~1\NOPDB.EXE C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\CCPD-LC\symlcsvc.exe C:\WINDOWS\wanmpsvc.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\cidaemon.exe C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Works Shared\WkUFind.exe C:\Program Files\Roxio\Easy CD Creator 5\DirectCD\DirectCD.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\Toolbox2.0\Apache Tomcat 4.0\webapps\Toolbox\StatusClient\StatusClient.exe C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\OrderReminder\OrderReminder\OrderReminder.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccApp.exe C:\Program Files\Brother\ControlCenter2\brctrcen.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\UpdateService\issch.exe C:\Program Files\Corel\Corel Photo Album 6\MediaDetect.exe C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\Toolbox2.0\Javasoft\JRE\1.3.1\bin\javaw.exe C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe C:\Program Files\Dell Support\DSAgnt.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exe C:\Program Files\iPod\bin\iPodService.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Works Shared\wkcalrem.exe C:\Program Files\Norton SystemWorks\Norton GoBack\GBTray.exe C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\SYMANT~1\SECURI~2\NSCSRVCE.EXE C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe C:\Documents and Settings\kurt smidansky\Desktop\hijackthis\HijackThis.exe R1 - Hi
You dont have a virus problem.Your problem is that there is not enough RAM.256mb of RAM is the minimum recomendation for XP.Add that to all the programs you have running and that will account for your slowness in booting up and running programs...Get more Ram.
