Mistake Please Help...Low Virtual Memory...XP Crash!
Hi there,

I really hope that somebody can help.

For the past few months my PC has been running very slow and this is especially noticeable on startup! Music quite often will distort/computer will slow right down to the point where it crashes and reboots itself!! I will quite often receive a warning balloon in the bottom-right hand corner of the desktop saying 'virtual memory low'.

Please could somebody provide some assistance...it would be greatly appreciated.

My System

uninstall the add on tool bars, VM should be set to the same amount of RAM installed on your pc, Tools, internet options, temp internet settings : adjust to the amount of ram installed on your pc., preform disk cleanup in system tools, defrag.

Hello 1jom and welcome,

Your system is infected. You may want to hold off on any uninstalls of toolbars until we're finished cleaning the system.

Please copy this page to Notepad and save to your desktop for reference as you will not have any browsers open while you are carrying out portions of these instructions.

It is IMPORTANT that you don't miss a step & perform everything in the correct order/sequence.

***************************************************

Download AlcanShorty from here.
  • Click the download button below and agree to download the fix.
  • Download Alcanshorty to your desktop.
  • DoubleClick alcanshorty_en.exe and click install
  • This will create a new folder on your desktop called alcanshorty_en
  • Open that folder and doubleclick Run.bat
  • Once the fix starts, your icons and desktop will disappear, this is normal.

Make sure you have a working internet connection. In case your firewall gives an alert, don't block it,
because alcanshorty needs to download some additional files to let the tool run properly.
  • Wait for the complete script execution box to popup and press OK.
  • Press exit to terminate the BFU program.

Perform an online scan using Internet Explorer with Panda ActiveScan
** click on "Free use ActiveScan" located on the top right hand corner
  1. Click Check Now & a 'pop up' window shall appear. *ensure that your pop up blocker doesn't block it
  2. Enter your e-mail address, country, and state & click Scan Now ...begins downloading 8 MB Panda's ActiveX controls
Begin the scan by selecting My Computer
  • If it finds any malware, it will offer you a report.
  • Please ignore any entry it finds and wants you to buy the program for removal as we will address this later.
  • Click on see report. Then click Save report

Finally, download combofix from one of these locations: **Save it to your desktop**
Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

That's correct, you'll not find combofix now. You just missed it. The tool was taken down for revisions a few hours after I posted my reply. No worries, we will work off the Panda report and new HijackThis log.

When did you install Windows Defender? Was it's active protection in place when you ran the alcanshorty.bfu?

Please copy this page to Notepad and save to your desktop for reference as you will not have any browsers open while you are carrying out these instructions.

Please download the ISTBar removal tool from Symantec into it's own folder. Do not run it yet.

----------------------------------

You have unzipped HijackThis to a temporary directory. It needs to be in a permanent folder. Please unzip it to your C:\ drive or desktop.

The program creates backup files that we may need to use later. If the program is in a Temporary folder, files may be deleted by you or automatically if your system is set to empty temp files.

----------------------------------

Please disable the following program(s) as they may interfere with the fixes below. You may re-enable them when we are through cleaning your system:

Windows Defender:
  • Open Windows Defender.
  • Click on Tools, Options.
  • Scroll down and uncheck Turn on real-time protection (recommended).
  • After you uncheck this, click on the Save button and close Windows Defender.

Open HijackThis and click on 'Do a System Scan Only'. Check the following entries:

Click 'Fix Checked' and close HijackThis.

Reboot into Safe Mode.

Go to My Computer->Tools->Folder Options->View tab:
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading:
* select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
*Also, make sure there is no checkmark beside Hide file extensions for known file types.
* Click OK.

Delete the following Folder:

c:\program files\common files\ Totem Shared

-----------------------------------

Run the ISTBar remover.

-----------------------------------

Reboot into Normal Mode.

Hi Ried,

I have removed windows defender completely from my system for the time-being.

I fixed the relevant files in hijackthis and deleted \Totem Shared folder, however, the Symantec ISTbar search provided no results. My system is still running exactly the same...extremely slow on start-up !!

Let's see if this tool reveals anything for us:

Download combofix from one of these locations: **Save it to your desktop**
Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall
