Possible spyware/malware problem

My computer has been running real slow for about a week now, so I called my service provider to figure out the problem. After 10 minutes of not getting anywhere he had me type in nestat -a at the cmd prompt to see how many ports it was listing. I told him it listed 32 of them and he said that's to many and that I had a spyware problem. I told him I run adaware and spybot regulary and they haven't showed anything. Then he tells me that I shouldn't have more than one anti-spyware program on my computer because they conflict with each other. That goes against eveything I've ever heard and now I am pretty sure this guy has no clue what he's talking about.

I run norton antivirus, adaware, spybot and even went to trendmicro and they didn't find anything. My computer takes along time to connect to websites except when it's a direct download. I checked my speed at speakeasy speed test and when the page loaded after about a minute it had a good download speed of 3.4 megabit, but it couldn't connect for the upload test. Does anybody have any ideas what's happening here? Thank you for your help.

Hi and welcome to TSF.

If the tech was talking about anti spyware then he was talking rubbish. If he was referring to anti virus then he was correct.

Anyway, to get you checked out, please follow Microbell’s 5 step process here and then post your HJT log in the HijackThis Forum.

Thank you for the reply. I followed those steps yesterday hoping they would fix the problem. So now I'll be posting my log in the other forum in a few minutes.

edited to add: he was talking about anti-spyware not antivirus which I only run norton.
