Hi There,
I thought I'd post here, as a new thread, a discussion that came up tonight at the house between my niece, now living with me, and her two friends. The question I'm about to ask brought about several different answers. As I'm in the process of downloading and installing spyware protection including a firewall, I'd really like to know the correct order that should be followed. Amazingly, this question brought about several different variations. We all know there can only be one safe and correct way to do it, right? Here it is: What is the step.by.step procedure with regards to downloading and installing software from an Internet site? I know you've all seen the message that appears where it says something to the effect "it is recommended that all Windows be closed before continuing to install this program"--or verbage to that effect. I thought I was doing everything correctly but this discussion tonight now has me wondering. Who better to ask than "The Varsity Team" here? As always, thanks again for your help!

Pick up a safe legitimate site to download your software. Authors website is always the best source. eg: to download ewido, prefer www.ewido.net.
Find the link to the download. Click on it. Approve the download when prompted and browse where you would like to download the file. For a software the file you are downloading will be a .zip .rar or an .exe file. After the download open the folder you downloaded your software into. If the file you downloaded is a zip or rar you will need winzip or winrar softwares installed on your system. So better have winrar. Since you do not have xp zip files might be trouble to open. here is a link to download a software. In the end you will have winrar software and you will practice :) http://www.rarlab.com/rar/wrar351.exe It doesnt matter if you close all the other windows during the download. But during installation some softwares conflict with some other processes running in the systems. Printer driver installations are very good examples. If you have a software that has a print option open during your printer driver installation your driver installation might be a corrupted one. So better close all other programs. Safe mode is not safe in means of secure to do anything. In safe mode many services that are necessary to install a program are not running. So normal mode should be place we should be installing softwares. And after installing the softwares get the updates if necessary and then reboot the system to see if everything is working properly and you are not gettinmg any error messages. Make sure you read the EULA licence agreements and such when prompted you to. After installing or uninstalling very large files such as big games I would recommend to do a defragmentation of your hard drive. |

Thanks for the info PurpleSky. Let me run this by you if I may. I did a "Search" and found that I do have "zip" file capability. I didn't see a "WinZip" program as such and frankly, don't have a clue how to work them.
Can I download what you suggested with the rar and it not conflict with the zip? Sorry if this seems like a stupid question but I just don't know ![]() To be honest, I'd really like to have something on here that I do understand and could work with. Besides, not to mention, I believe your word was "practice." Sounds like a winner to me! Looking forward to hearing from you again. Thanks so very much.
