What happens to quarantined files from anti-virus and anti-spyware programs if your have to uninstall the programs from your computer? Can the virus get back on your computer?

No programs-No security. Without any anti virus or spyware programs is like leaving the door wide open when you leave your house.

What I was really wondering is what happens to the quarantined viruses, spyware etc. are they put back on the hard drive until you reinstall anti-virus, anti-spyware programs?

If you go back to the applications online or in your mail program where the came from then they will be reinstalled. Otherwise they are not put back on your hard drive if the anti virus or spyware program is uninstalled . They leave in the uninstalled programs.

And obviously nothing will stop your computer from getting infected by the same virus again, since different files can always get infected. Oh, and at least when it comes to the Symantec line of security products, the quarantined files get deleted when you uninstall the products or choose to delete the files in question. If you don't recognize the infected (and quarantined) files, then you can safely delete them.

Cheers,
Petteri
