Download Problems and Exploit-ObscuredHtml
I've been having problems with downloading certain types of files for the last few weeks.
I am able to download ZIP files as well as updates for programs like Adaware, Spybot, Spyware Blaster and McAfee AntiVirus which all have the update function built into the program itself.
I am unable to download mp3's, updates for programs that require a download from a website, nor am I able to install the Windows update file that came out this month. All of these attempts follow the normal download process with the progress box showing the progress bar, time remaining and download rate.
I normally download to my desktop but created a specific folder on the desktop when this problem started. When I check the desktop, or the new folder, there is no sign of the file. There is also no sign of it when I search for it on the computer. Interestingly, when I use Registry Mechanic, the complete download stringpath shows up in the scan results.
I am running Win XP SP2. Downloads are enabled in my browser.
I receive automatic update notifications for AntiVirus, and check for updates for my anti-spyware several times a week. I run all of these at least once a week.
I also seem to have 'Exploit-ObscuredHtml' lurking somewhere in the bowels of my computer. As seems to be the usual pattern, a McAfee window pops up during a Trend Micro Housecall scan saying that it was found and cleaned. The Housecall scan will then usually find several items to be deleted. Since it finds bad stuff, it recommends a second scan be done. When you scan the second time, lo and behold, at about the 3/4 point of the scan, a McAfee window pops up again with the same message.
I don't know whether the two issues are related but I could use some advice on resolving these issues.

I have moved your thread to the Hijack This Section. Please subscribe to this thread by click on thread tools on the top right of the thread to receive instant notification about replies.


Download CWShredder and run it. Click on 'I Agree' button if you agree with it. Click on 'Fix' (it will automatically fix anything it finds for you) and OK. If it asks if you want to delete a certain random file, choose No and post that filename here. Let it finish the scan and then hit Next and Exit.


Download Ewido Security Suite
  • Install Ewido Security Suite
  • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck..
    • Install background guard
    • Install scan via context menu
  • Double-click the icon on Desktop to launch Ewido
You will need to update Ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
  • Then click on Start Update.
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido
When you have finished updating, EXIT Ewido.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Use the up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode and press Enter.

Run Ewido with it's updated definitions:(...it's important that all windows must be closed)
  • Click Scanner
  • Click Complete System Scan to begin scanning.
  • Click OK when prompted to clean files
With the first file it prompts to clean, select the option:
  • "Perform action on all infections"
  • Choose clean and click OK.
Once finished, click the Save report button & save the report to your desktop. Post that in your next reply along with any other logs requested.

** Ewido scan would require at least an hour
Please download HijackThis - this program will help us determine if there are any spyware/malware on your computer. Create a folder at C:\HJT and move HijackThis.exe there. Double click on the program to run it.

1. If it gives you an intro screen, just choose 'Do a system scan and save a logfile'.
2. If you don't get the intro screen, just hit Scan and then click on Save log
and post it here. Do not fix anything in HijackThis since they may be harmless.

· Perform an online scan with Internet Explorer with Panda ActiveScan

Click on the "Free To Use ActiveScan" located on the top right hand corner
  1. Click Check Now and a "pop up" window will appear. * Please ensure that your pop up blocker doesn't block it *
  2. Enter your e-mail address, country, and state & click Scan Now * The download of the 8 MB Panda's ActiveX control will take place *
Begin the scan by selecting My Computer
  • If it finds any malware, it will offer you a report.
  • Please ignore any entry it finds and the offer to buy the program to remove the entry, as we will address this later.
  • Click on See report then click Save report
*You needn't remain online while it's doing the scan but you have to re-connect after it has finished to see the report.
*Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

The 3 reports we need:
· HijackThis
· Ewido
· Panda

HJT and Panda
Here are the Hijack This and Panda scans of my computer. Unfortunately, due to my downloading issue, I was unable to download Ewido. As usual, it acted like it was downloading to my folder, but disappeared into thin air. A search showed no sign of it. I will try to download it on another computer and install it from a disk.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below. Also if you have any programs that may prevent system changes (like Spybot's TeaTimer program, Ad-aware's Ad-Watch, and others), make sure you disable them before doing any of the fixes (or accept the changes for the fix we give you when asked by the programs).

Go to My Computer->Tools (or View)->Folder Options->View tab:
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders (it's Show all files for Windows 98).
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm and then click OK.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

Please download the ISTBar removal tool from Symantec into it's own folder and run it.

Note: Removing this adware component from the system will likely cause the program that installed it to not function as intended. The uninstaller generally identifies the programs that will not work after uninstallation

Download CleanUp! http://cleanup.stevengould.org/ (Alternate Link if main link don't work - http://www.greyknight17.com/spy/CleanUp.exe ) and install it. CleanUp! deletes EVERYTHING out of your temp/temporary folders, it does not make backups. If you have any documents or programs that are saved in any Temporary Folders, please make a backup of these before running CleanUp! Don't run it yet.

Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode (if you don't know how, go to http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/foru...howtutorial=61 ). Make sure to close any open browsers.

Uninstall the following via the Add/Remove Panel (Start->(Settings)->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs) if found:

Run CleanUp! and click on the Options button. Uncheck 'Scan local drives for temporary files'. Also uncheck those two Newsgroup entries if you don't want to delete them. Click OK and then click on the CleanUp! button. Let it run. After it's done, choose Yes to logoff.

Restart and run a new panda scan and post with a fresh HJT log.
