"cannot start OLEAUT.DLL" poss HIJACK?

Hi, My computer crashed, and when I rebooted it I got this meesage:

"cannot start OLEAUT.DLL check file to determine the problem"

I can't run any programmes. I can't search for files in the hard drive. I can't look at the CD drive, whatever I try to do I just get the above message. I suspect that a CDrom that I was using at the time may have been infected. The computer in question isn't connected to the net - I use it just for music and was worried about viruses!

Any help gratefully accepted

Asumming your operating system is Windows ME try this...

Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition

Extract and replace the damaged file. To do this, follow these steps:

1. Start your computer in Safe mode. To do this, restart your computer. Press and hold down the F8 key after your computer completes the Power On Self Test (POST), and then select Safe Mode on the Startup menu.
2. Click Start, and then click Run.
3. In the Run dialog box, type: msconfig, and then click OK.
4. In the Windows File Checker Utility window, click Extract File.
5. In the Extract one file from installation disk dialog box, type oleaut32.dll, and then click Start.
6. In the Restore from box, type drive:\Windows\Options\InstallNOTE: Use c:\windows\options\install if you installed a Windows Millennium Edition retail product, or C:\windows\options\cabs if your computer manufacturer installed Windows Millennium Edition.
7. In the Save file in box, type C:\Windows\Desktop.
8. Click OK to extract the file.
9. Drag the extracted file from your desktop to the C:\Windows\System folder, and then click Yes to overwrite the file.
10. Restart your computer. If you extract a file directly to the destination folder to replace a file that is protected by the Windows File Checker utility, you may receive the following error message:
Extract File
The specified file is protected and may not be copied or deleted.

Ignore it.

Then see if you still get the message. The file may be corrupt.

Same Issue - Windows 98 SE

Hi, I am having the same is except I am using Windows 98 on a Toshiba Tecra 8000....

I get "Error Starting Program" "The OLEAUT32.DLL file cannot start. Check the file to determine the problem"

The file is located in Windows/System file...

Any help would be appreciated.

Also, when I open a file the View is gone? e.g. "My Computer" when I first open there are no files shown, but if I go to view and select they show up but when I close and reopen I have to do all over again?

Thanks
Steve
