Disable Windows Firewall and get a third-party firewall such as ZoneAlarm or Kerio.

I tried Windows built in firewall, ran all kinds of tests, the thing is no good.

i already have netgear router as posted above.firewall xp is just back up. My netgear router should be working, something must be wrong maybe with my set up. That would be a little too much I think to go for another new firewall attempt. I think ill wait for a moderator thanks anyway.

Do you have a firewall on your router? A plain ol' router won't stop a hacker.

Well Windows Firewall is well....... junk. It only monitors what comes in, not what goes out.

Your best bet is to download and install Zone Alarm Free because it's the last good free firewall, and monitors both incoming and outcoming things.

Hi grassi

Looks to me like you've been given some good advice here.

As has been pointed out Windows firewall only monitors incoming traffic - it does not monitor outgoing traffic. So, If a trojan or hacker managed to get to your PC, you would have no idea what was being sent out - files, passwords etc, etc. All you have to do is download ZoneAlarm, disable Windows firewall Start > Control Panel > Security Centre and turn the firewall OFF. Then install ZA and you will then have two layers of protection.

You will need to check your router set up - try posting in our Networking Forum.

At the end of the day, the amount of protection you want is up to you. Me, I have as much as I can lay my hands on - and I've always been virus and trojan free.

ok Glaswegian

i will follow your instructions, and thanks for replying wasnt convinced untill a team member replied. Anyway could you tell me the purpose of my router i have now, im not so sure i know??(quick briefing). then i will try posting router in networking. One more thing and NO DISRESPECT, but did you get second opinion through your moderator team. I get nervous about too many different people with opinions, but do understand that your opinion is probably best and was observed by your team. Do me a favor, if you get a chance that tetonbob and ried are good people say hello for me AND JUST TO LET YOU KNOW AS I SAID TO THEM IM COMPUTER ILLITERATE SO FORGIVE ME. And thanks for your time. Enjoy your new year. Oh yeah i read somewhere that zone alarm could conflict with ad aware or others and i have some others boy + ad aware.

Hi grassi

I was speaking from personal experience regarding ZA - I've used it for years and never had any conflicts with other programmes. There are plenty of websites that will tell you how useless the MS firewall is - just do a Google search.

I'm afraid I have absolutely no knowledge of routers - don't use one, so I can't help you there. Best to post in the Networking Forum - that's where the experts are.

Good luck!

Yep, you can buy ZA Pro. Comes with its own anti spyware, e-mail protection, AV monitoring. ID lock and so on. There's no real difference with the firewall part though and that's what is important.

If you want to test your router's firewall you can do it here.Disable Windows' firewall first though. If it passes all tests then you only need a software firewall to block outgoing traffic.I have a modem\router so I only need ZoneAlarm for outgoing traffic, which I've also used for some time without any problems.
