Freeware Pop-up blocker?
I'm looking for a good freeware pop-up blocker that will work well but I hate the ones where they constantly alert you with large windows about pages being blocked.. they are just as bad as the pop-up!

errr... I wouldn't recommend toolbars or free pop-up blockers. Get a firewall and keep it up to date.
I see your OS is xp. If did not do so you can consider upgrading it to sp2. It comes with a pop up blocker. Last edited by PurpleSky : 07-25-2005 at 09:49 AM. |

I have been using Panicware's free Pop-Up Stopper for over 4 years. I have never had a problem.
http://www.panicware.com/product_psfree.html ----- I would also recommend (if you are a WinXP user) to turn off the Messenger service which is the medium for popups to occur on your computer in the first place. This service was originally designed for network administrators who could use the service to send network wide emergency or security alerts to all terminals at one time. But a) that has never been used by any IT dept that I have heard of and b) the good old advertising community seized the tool for the sole purpose of sending popups thru your browser. I recommend turning it off. Manually turn off Popups [Win XP] Start | Run | type "services.msc" | rightclick Messenger | select Stop. then select Properties | under Startup Type, set to Disabled. OK OK. Reboot. ----- Moreover, some of these popups originate within some of the banner ads themselves. So why not just block them out. A custom Hosts file can do that for you. At least it will block out the known badguy advertisers. A custom Hosts file can prevent your computer from visiting some known badguy sites entirely. Download hosts.zip, unzip and doubleclick to install. Just say no to popups.

Yes. Windows 2000 has the Messenger service also. I am not 100% positive if services.msc can be accessed through the Run command line.
If not, here are the instructions to get to it through Control Panel. * Click Start | Settings | Control Panel | Administrative Tools | Services * Scroll down and highlight "Messenger" * Right-click the highlighted line and choose Properties. * Click the STOP button. * Select Disable in the Startup Type scroll bar * Click OK * Reboot For Win95/98 machines: Manually turn off Popups [Win95/98] Start | Settings | Control Panel |Add/Remove Programs | Windows Setup tab | Accessories section | Uncheck Winpopup. OK OK. Alternatively, you can do Find Files and rename winpopup.exe to something different like, winpopup.bad.
