Pin Want to keep new computer... new - with Firewall?

Hi everyone,

I have learned a lot regarding Spyware/Virus software over the few years I've gone through a couple laptops, but one thing I have never been able to have a firm understanding of - is firewalls.

I just bought a new computer today, and of course I would like to keep it free from attacks as much as possible, especially since I will be using it at non-secure hotspots at the library etc, and know it will be vulnerable.

I was wondering if anyone could lend me a few tips on Firewalls, and any suggested freeware programs that are effective at keeping out uninvited guests, paired with my usual assortment of Virus protection: Malwarebytes, Avast, and Spybot S&D (sometimes I will install Ad-Aware or CC Cleaner as well).

The hardest part is, I have already tried to install and take advantage of firewall software, last year, but it ended up confusing me, and causing too many usage problems and false alarms from what I remember. Basically, I'm looking for the best way to reduce potential threats, because I know there is no 100% safe-guard unfortunately...

THANKS!!! :)

Re: Want to keep new computer... new - with Firewall?

PS: Would a program like TOR IP Masking, or Zone Alarm, be effective in the above goals?

Hi:

If you read here, about half way down, it discuses firewalls:

Thanks a lot for your help! :)

Looks like Zone Alarm is getting good reviews, and acts like a gate-keeper... I appreciate you dropping in to help out!

PS: Would you, or anyone, suggest TOR IP Masking as a way to increase security and counter potential threats, confusing them with your actual IP identity?

It will not help increase your "security" at all.
