Virus deleted every file on HD!! What recovery tool??

My daughter managed to catch a nasty virus that deleted every file, directory and partition on her laptop. She is connected to the internet. The laptop does not boot, so Win XP is blown away.

Using the Linux Rescue CD, I can see the deleted files and recognize the partitions. The CD includes an undelete utility, but it looks like it is intended to be used for a small number of files.

I need a free tool that will allow me to do bulk undelete of files, including system files. Any suggestions?

Re: Virus deleted every file on HD!! What recovery tool??

Most recovery tools are made for windows. Your best bet is a manufacturer CD, or just a fresh re-install. Just search on google. Even if you find one, it wont be free. I have never heard of a virus being able to do that, if it was that bad and on that hard drive, I recommend you backup the files with a USB converter or by putting it in another PC, and just wiping that drive and starting over. If a virus did that, you have to make sure it's wiped off.

Re: Virus deleted every file on HD!! What recovery tool??

I discovered that my daughters flat mate wiped the HD. Then she discovered he was a drug addict, so she moved out of the flat. No virus, just scum.

I will try the Linux rescue disk and see if that works.

It's a pity ComboFix doesn't work on drug addicts.

Hello!

Tell us did you try to install operating system on partition it is formatted???

It is still possible to backup files.

Take a look at this thread:

http://www.techsupportforum.com/hard...-computer.html

Download GetDataBack
GetDataBack download link
and scan HDD.
If software finds deleted files, it is possible to save data.
But you must purchase software :/

Hope this helps.

Re: Virus deleted every file on HD!! What recovery tool??

try the sfcscan command and youll need the OS cd from windows and that can recover the files for the system but to be honest sense is a fix for the system it will have to loose the data that has been infected..i recommend always make a backup with a USB drive and also make another on your harddrive. making back ups will not let something like a child ruining your work OUCH..recovery tools are more too let the service of the applications run again before they got infected.

ALSO if so important maybe just import the work files you want to save to a USB drive and if it works you just might need to scan it with an antivirus so you move the virus. DONT DELETE, MOVE THE VIRUS..any antivirus can move the virus but am note soo sure .

WAIT A SEC. YOU WANT A RECOVERY TOOL TO WORK ON WIN98's OS???
THATS A BIG NO NO
I understand if your a fan. but one of the main reasons Windows has so many UPGRADES are for not loosing anykind of DATA soo easily.

If the data is important, and worth $79.00 get data back will retrieve your files, you can down load the trial to see what files are recoverable, then you need to buy a license to save the files.
