Confliker on Win2K
Hello,
We’re being hit hard by the Confliker virus (aka downadup, kido). We have installed Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) on most machines and its working fine. However, we still a few Win2K machines. MSE does not install on W2K. Does anyone know of a “free” active virus remover that runs unattended on Win2K server, particularly one that protects against confliker? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks, SKK |

Re: Confliker on Win2K
Hello, SKK -
Are all machines current with Windows Updates? Have you run the MS MSRT on the Windows 2000 boxes? I'm unaware of any free AntiVirus for Windows 2000 Server that fit your unattended needs, but Avira free reports to run on Windows 2000, SP4 and update rollup 1 If someone knows of a free solution for Windows 2000 Server, please chime in.

Re: Confliker on Win2K
Yup, we pretty much keep all updated, albeit this is a Win2K box. If there's something not too pricey (<$100), we still may be interested. If it cost mcuh more than that, I think I'd rather spend the $$ on updating the OS. The only thing is, all works fine as is - you know, if it works don't fix it.
Thanks for your time, Steve |

Re: Confliker on Win2K
Well, I'd say check out the vendors and see what types of prices they have available for the number of licenses needed. Some have licensing arrangments for under 10 workstations/servers/connections, some do not.
Most of the main vendors have a file server edition, many have trials available. Conficker should be able to be addressed by any of the vendors. Disabling autoruns and patching the OS has been stated as the most effective way to cut down on it's spread. Kaspersky and Eset both have Server editions which support this OS, though the price is above your target. Avira has a 30 day trial. I saw no mention of price. AVG would seem to fit your price range for 5 connections. I don't have experience with server products, I mostly support personal machines. Again, if anyone can offer more experienced answers, feel free to chime in. As you likely know, support for Windows 2000 will end within a couple of years. The end-of-life date for Windows 2000 will be no sooner than January 1, 2010. Extended support is currently slated to end 7/13/2010 So, a one year license will stave off the inevitable OS upgrade, but an upgrade would appear to be in the future. Of course, MS has pushed back EOL dates before, and may do so again.
