New Laptop

I bought a new laptop for my wife and it is one month old. The anti virus protection has run out. I installed the free Avira anti virus software and everything installed correctly. But when it tried to update itself it stalls. Is this the right one to be using with windows vista or do I need to turn something off for it to update correctly. Help

What AV did you have and how did you remove it?

Re: New Laptop

Try AVG or Avast, both really good free anti-virus programs

Re: New Laptop

Hi -

Having more than one AV installed at a time can often cause conflict.

If you want McAfee gone, use the McAfee Removal Tool after you've uninstalled it.

What I would do...

Download the McAfee Removal Tool.

Have your new AV installer handy. Then also uninstall McAfee.

Next..run the McAfee Removal Tool.

Double click on MCPR.exe to launch it, then Click Run. A window should appear and disappear, this is normal. A new window should popup and begin the uninstall. When prompted to reboot your computer type Y.

Once back in Windows...

Install your new AV...then reconnect to the internet, allow it to update, run a full system scan.

Avira Free sometimes has troubles with it's update servers. One of the only drawbacks of this very good free AV.

You can manually update the definitions.

Re: New Laptop

Do the manual install of defs. It's pretty straightforward.

When I installed Avira on a test machine yesterday, I ended up doing the same thing.

Avira has a support forum, also.

Re: New Laptop

Just to add...it seems there's a large number of Avira users experiencing update issues as Avira pushes a large update. Servers are overloaded, and this has unfortunately been a recurring problem with Avira. Sad, because detections are excellent on an updated product.
