Re: new computer.. what programs?

The one of the few free security software that also provide web access scanning is Avast! Home Edition. According to Virus Bulletin, the virus detection rate is 99.3% and malware detection rate is 98.3%. Its Network Shield can be considered as a firewall. That takes care of antivirus and firewall.

If your hard drive was made by western digital, they offer Acronis True Image as backup and restore software. It allows you to make an image of your current hard drive(s) and offers boot management in case Windows does not startup.

To clean up crap, the only decent cleaner is see is Ccleaner and Window's built in defragementer.

Don't listen to other people who say install stuff like AVG for antivirus, Spyware Doctor, Ad-Aware Free, Spybot S&D, Spyware Blaster all for antispyware, and Outpost Firewall for firewall. That will just slow up your new computer so much it'll be like an old crappy one. Too more security products do not help. Besides, every single one in this paragraph is ineffective in what they're supposed to do.

For a paid product, consider Eset Nod32 Antivirus. It has good detection rates, awesome heuristics detection, and good web-access scanner. If your modem has a firewall in it already, just use Windows Firewall, if not then instead of Eset Nod32 Antivirus, choose Eset Smart Security(includes firewall). Finally, there are many things to configure in Windows to close up the chance of being hacked or infected, look around. I wrote too much.

Re: new computer.. what programs?

Avira antivirus is free for personaluse and is as effective as kaspersky av- you can also get the fullversion free for a year if you subscribe to one of their promotional partners web sites (cancel the subscription before the free trial period expires and you still get Avira preminum.
