[SOLVED] Goofy pop up question

Over the past week I've had a box pop up on my computer. I'm going to try describing it, but it's a little weird.

It's a blue box on the bottom right hand of the screen. Not tied to any web browser. It has a computer icon with an arrow in the shape of a circle on the monitor of the graphic. Below it are three boxes you can click on, but there is no text in the boxes. I've clicked on the far right one and I get a preferences-type screen with a combination of letters and numbers (Google search didn't yield anything). I clicked on the middle box and the pop up went away...but it's popped up twice now. Can't figure out what it means!

Anyone have any idea, based on my admittedly vague description?

Thanks!

Re: Goofy pop up question

Perhaps a screenshot would be in order. Sounds perhaps something like a video/graphics display flyout. Did you update video drivers recently?

Re: Goofy pop up question

Thanks. Yeah, I'm kicking myself for not getting a screenshot. It's appeared twice now...I may have to wait to see if it randomly appears again.

The only thing that may have done it is I went to a live streaming video site I don't normally go to. Wonder if it half-installed something?

Otherwise, no new drivers.

Re: Goofy pop up question

In lieu of a screenshot, it might be wise to have the machine checked out by one of malware removal helpers.

Please follow our pre-posting process outlined here:

NEW INSTRUCTIONS - Read This Before Posting For Malware Removal Help

After running through all the steps, please post the requested logs in the Virus/Trojan/Spyware Help forum, not here.

If you have trouble with one of the steps, simply move on to the next one, and make note of it in your reply.

Please note that the Virus/Trojan/Spyware Help forum is extremely busy, and it may take a while to receive a reply.

Re: Goofy pop up question

Thanks for all your help. The more I thought about it today, I wonder if the circular arrow inside the computer graphic has to do with HP's QuickPlay software (since I am using an HP laptop). Which leads me to wonder if maybe there was an update alert that is appearing incorrectly. Maybe?

I'll run some more ad-removal software and see if it helps. If it keeps coming back I'll send a screenshot.

Thanks, tetonbob!

Re: Goofy pop up question

As an update to a question I had a few weeks ago: the icon keeps popping up and driving me nuts! I'm wondering if it's a spyware program.

I went ahead and took some screen shots of what the icon looks like. The picture "Icon1" is what pops up on the bottom right side of my desktop.

As you can see there are empty-celled buttons; I've clicked on the button on the far right and I get a host of options that I don't understand (see Icon2 file for what the menu looks like). Clicking on the middle button makes the icon go away. I haven't clicked on the far right button, but assume it would install something.

Anyone know what it was? Tetonbob: do you know, perhaps?

I really appreciate it!

Re: Goofy pop up question

Sorry, but I don't know.

I would refer back to post #4.

Did you install a video player? In another language? Is there an application in your Installed Programs list you don't recognize, or that you know is from that time period?

Without being in front of the machine, or looking at logs, I can only guess. (please don't post logs here if you decide to go that route)

Re: Goofy pop up question

Great news - combed through my program list and found the icon. Turns out it is an HP Update icon. Sounds like I'm not the only person who encountered this problem: Remove partial HP Update popup

I'll remove it and move on. One of those problems that makes you feel stupid after finding out what it was...

Again, thanks for your service to the people out there, tetonbob.

Thanks for letting us know what solved it for you. No reason to feel bad about it, odd things do happen with computers.
