What precautions should I take when I install new Windows in my New Laptop

Hello,

After reading this sticky tip-post, I hv understood following points:

1) I need an anti-virus .. I hv already bought kaspersky internet security 2009 genuine copy ..

2) Firewall ( Not sure which one I'm gonna use it .. Any recommndation ??)

3) Spyware Blaster and Spyware Guard ( Both are needed or only one???)

One query is: If I'm using kaspersky internet security, do I need to install this anti-spywares or kapsersky will take care of it??

4) Scan the system with Anti Virus and other scanners on a regular basis. Keep the definitions up to date. Keep Windows up to date. Don’t download files from sources you don’t know. Don’t go to dodgy websites. Don’t open e-mail attachments from sources you don’t know.

Other than thse, do I need anything that is essential to protect my laptop?? .. How about registery mechanic ?? is it woth ??

plz let me know with your inputs .. any help would be appreciated ..

I believe Kaspersky Internet Security comes with a firewall, so don't worry about getting a separate one.

As for Spyware Blaster and Spyware Guard, you only need one of the two, but then go ahead and get a antispyware scanner like Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, Spybot - Search & Destroy, SUPERAntiSpyware or Ad-Aware (Spyware Blaster/Guard keep spyware from getting on your computer and the scanner will take care of any that make it through (just be sure to run the scan on a regular basis)).

Other than those, just make sure you keep everything updated and you got everything down.

Re: What precautions should I take when I install new Windows in my New Laptop

Good advice.

FYI, SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard do different things, so it's not really one or the other. That said, SpywareGuard was designed for older malware, and may not be as effective against today's threats.

SpywareGuard is still effective against the older malware it was written for, and has virtually no effect on resources.

You can read more about it here, here and here

Quote:
The reason for less frequent updates with SpywareGuard is that much of its detection abilities are heuristics in nature. (Basically this means it doesn't need a specific signature for every spyware it catches, simply an overall pattern or approach-used, which it can identify and then trigger off of.) So, SpywareGuard works for many of the newer versions of the same spyware installers even without adding "signatures" for them.
Quote:
SpywareGuard is a resident scanner (similar in a way to how an anti-virus program works) which proactively scans files prior to them being executed; looking for spyware installation kits and such. It scans with both known signatures and some generic protection techniques to detect and prevent spyware installation. SG also includes capabilities to prevent browser hijacks and provides built-in download protection for Internet Explorer. Because of all of this, SpywareGuard does run in the background. In fact, there will be two processes related SG in your task manager.

SpywareBlaster is a preventative program. It sets flags in the registry to prevent the running of a specific list of bad spyware related ActiveX controls. This includes general spyware and malicious dialers. It also blocks a list of known spyware related cookies in IE and Firefox. SpywareBlaster should be run periodically, say once a week, to check for updates to its database. Other than that it doesn't need to be running to provide protection, so there are no processes run either at startup or in the background.

Re: What precautions should I take when I install new Windows in my New Laptop

soham100,

As well as the above I think the MVPS Hosts File is definitely worth using. Its resource usage is negligible as long as you disable the DNS Client Startup as directed in the Editors Note. Also, it only has to be updated approx. once a month and this is a very simple procedure.

The only other thing I would add is the use of either WoT or McAfee Site Advisor. It simply adds good, bad or unknown labels to your search engine findings.

Oh, and of course, you may want to consider an alternative browser to IE, such as Firefox.

Hope this helps.

Cheers.

Rob.

Software like Avast! and Comodo Firewall are good recommendations for protection.
