For free? I love Avira Antivir or Avast!. Both do automatic updates, and both are pretty good as far detection rates. Antivir, in my opinion is more classy and professional looking, where Avast! looks more like a radio style.
When Avast updates you'll hear a voice (by default) letting you know your defenitions are up-to-date. I don't recall if you can turn them off or not. When Antivir updates you'll see a big ad with an OK button at the bottom that you'll have to click to exit it. There was a line to add to disable this, but that string no longer works for the current version. As far as paid antiviruses go, just as Leo Laporte says, trust ESET's NOD32. They are the best in detection rates and lowest on system resources. Hope that helps. Another good way to protection yourself is to make sure and do your updates! I wrote an article about updates you can find at my blog. The article will be released on the 7 August, 2009. If you update and get a good antivirus, you should be good to go, but all-in-all it's your browsing habits and downloading habits that will get you in the most trouble. If you're downloading an infected peer-to-peer file, be wary. Only download from people you trust, and only go to sites you know are safe. Thanks for being proactive!
