"Flash Write" hacking?

Hey,

I'm a big noob and need a question answered... Earlier i received an email of somebody and it seemed to be empty, but i remember there was some file attached, something named Flash Write... I checked agian and it was missing, i may just be completely confused by it but as I rather be safe than sorry.. so I am posting here to get an answer. Now this person that send me it is somebody i havent talked to in yearsssssss and he knows his computer stuff... So I am wondering can he hack me, or keep logs of what I am doing with a possible flash write file?

Hope somebody understands what I mean, my English is not too good.

Thank you

Re: "Flash Write" hacking?

I did a little research and couldn't really find anything. Only a tool to do with Flash to go by the name of Flash Write.

Now, did you install anything your friend sent you, or opened what he sent you? If not, you should just be able to delete the file and consider yourself safe. Were you using webmail or a program? Webmail is safer to view things in due to the sandbox effect that they will have with MOST attachments.

If it was a program, I'd be a little more paranoid. Try running a virus scan with up-to-date definitions, and then go online and get a second opinion by using something like ESET's online virus scanner (link below).

Most keyloggers and other bad programs have to be executed from another executable to be installed in the background.

What I believe might have happened was he accidentally placed that attachment in an email headed for you.

A general rule of thumb, do not OPEN attachments sent to you by strangers or someone that you don't trust. By open, I mean execute or launch. Try using a webmail service compared to a desktop email client, it's a little safer that way, when viewing attachments (but not when it comes to downloading and opening them!) Just be careful of what you get.
