dvd drive and virus

Hi,
i recently got a trojan and cleaned it out. everything appears normal; but my combo dvd burner, will not see a dvd, cd, or blank cd when it is placed in the drive; (it will see a blank dvd though. but i only tried the one time).
i am afraid to uninstall the drive as i do not know how to reinstall it.
i have tried reflashing it with firmware, but that has not fixed it.
clicking on "my computer" shows that the "dvd drive" icon is there.

My question is. can a virus/trojan even affect a dvd drive this way, or is this more of a coincidence? , ( ie., a matter of chance/timing?)
my apologies to this forum community, if this is a "stupid" question, but i do not where to start.
Gracias,
Jianc

Re: dvd drive and virus

I'm not completely sure on this, but I know that the ComboFix program (and perhaps other tools) that people use in the cleaning process disables Windows' autorun feature. This could have something to do with your issue. So any disc you insert is not recognized when you go to My Computer?

Hi Baejung92,
Thank you for the info! My dvd-drive seems beyond recovery. I will be looking to buy an external optical drive with a usb connection.
(Again I put in a blanc dvd disc. It is recognized by computer. The other discs are not recognized. ie., cds or dvd with data.) (It is funny. I restored the registry, but that action did not restore the "autorun" feature setting.)

However, I am grateful for your insight into "autorun". I checked the settings for cd, cd audio and dvd. I believe the virus caused the state to be in "Limbo".
That is, Windows was not set to "prompt" on disc insertion, nor was it set to "automatically open" on disc insertion. I have learned something! Thank you.
