Symantec question

I have MBAM and Symantec running on the same PC. Symantec can't get rid of the quarantined files, so I want to give MBAM a shot. However, MBAM isn't detecting anything.

If I chose to restore the files back to their places, will I wreck my laptop before MBAM gets a chance to get rid of them? Is it safer to have Symantec keep them under control?

What quarantined files? In Symantec's quarantine?
What Symantec product are you using?

The only reason to restore quarantined files would be if they were falsely detected. Items in quarantine do not pose a threat.

Re: Symantec question

It lists them as W32.Virut.CF, W32.SILLYFDC and Trojan horses. I can't tell what are false positives and what one;s are legitimate.

One of the files is reg32.exe. From what I remember that is very bad. Another was a trojan loaded into an exe I downloaded and trojans are mostly from temp files......

I shouldn't restore these, should I?

EDIT: I'm using Symantec Antivirus, It was supplied by my school so I don't know what version it is.

Re: Symantec question

As I said, there's no reason to dequarantine files, unless they were falsely detected.

If the machine has a Virut infection, it's very serious indeed. Virut is a PE file infector, and can infect many if not all exe scr html htm asp and php files on a machine.

If the machine connects to a network such as a school, it's possible to transmit the infection across the network.

You should scan a couple core OS files to determine if the machine has a Virut infection. If it does, it must be formatted. There are some vendors and tools our there which claim to cure Virut, the problem is that the virus has a number of bugs in its code, and as a result, it may misinfect a proportion of executable files and therefore, the files are corrupted beyond repair.

Please go to: VirusTotal
  • On the page you'll find a "Browse" button.
  • Next to the browse button you'll see a box to enter text.
  • Please copy/paste the following:

    C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE

  • Then click the "Send File " button just below.
  • This will scan the file. Please be patient.
  • If you get a message saying File has already been analyzed: click Reanalyze file now
  • Once scanned, copy and paste the results in your next reply, or simply provide the link to the results page.
  • Please repeat for the following files:

    • C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe
      C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\lsass.exe

Re: Symantec question

I gather this is a Vista machine?

Not too much to be concerned about there, if so.

I think I've answered your base question about quarantine. Leave them.

The items are safe there, as they've been rendered inert. To the best of my knowledge, Symantec empties it's quarantine on a schedule. You should also be able to finally remove those items from quarantine manually. See if this helps:

http://www.d.umn.edu/itss/security/nav/quarantine.html

For Symantec specific questions, you'd be better off contacting the school help desk, or Symantec Support.

If you have other questions related to malware issues, please follow the instructions here, and post the logs in a new thread in the malware removal section.

NEW INSTRUCTIONS - Read This Before Posting For Malware Removal Help

After running through all the steps, please post the requested logs in the Virus/Trojan/Spyware Help forum, not here.

If you have trouble with one of the steps, simply move on to the next one, and make note of it in your reply.

Please note that the Virus/Trojan/Spyware Help forum is extremely busy, and it may take a while to receive a reply.
