Just installed BitDefender 2009 (can of worms) -- No internet connection now

Hey guys, love this site, and my first time posting...

My girlfriends computer had a suspected worm, so I decided to dump the out-of-date norton, and install bitdefender 2009. Ran a couple scans, and it took care of the infection, and then the fun started:
First, windows wouldn't finish startup (this is after rebooting for installation which went fine), and I found that it was conflicting with Zonealarm, so I turned off that. S now I am able to access the internet only for a few moments before the connection goes away. Other ports still work, Bittorrent still has a connection, but Firefox or IE is a no-go.

Anyone have any suggestions? I'd love some help with this
Thanks!

Re: Just installed BitDefender 2009 (can of worms) -- No internet connection now

I am connected to my network, and I can ping with no packets lost. But I'm a quasi noob, and really don't know what my next course of action should be. any suggestions would really be helpful.

Hi -

You might want to contact Bitdefender Support, since they are a paid product.

Does your version of Bitdefender have a firewall also? If so, there will still be conflict. You mentioned turning off ZoneAlarm, try uninstalling it.

Did you run the Norton Removal Tool when you uninstalled Norton?

Please use the instructions on this page to completely uninstall your Norton Products.

Do the issues persist in Safe Mode with Networking?

Are you sure all the infection is gone?

Re: Just installed BitDefender 2009 (can of worms) -- No internet connection now

hey tetonbob,

Thanks for the reply... After uninstalling zonealarm, it's working. I didn't use the tool to uninstall, but I guess it's too late now. Could you recommend a firewall that will work with this software? Or if not, maybe there is a better solution to this problem, is kapersky and zonealarm a viable option?

Re: Just installed BitDefender 2009 (can of worms) -- No internet connection now

Hi -

First...what version of Bitdefender 2009? Is is one of the suites?

BitDefender Total Security 2009
BitDefender Internet Security 2009

Or the standalone BitDefender Antivirus 2009?

if a suite (one of the first two), you don't need another firewall.

Second, it's never too late to run the NRT. If Norton was once on the machine, and the NRT was not used, go ahead and use it anyway.

Some software firewall options available here:

PC Safety and Security--What Do I Need?

That said, with the advent of highspeed internet, most machines are behind a router with a hardware firewall. It's all I use for mine, that and the native firewall of XP or Vista.

It was the standealone. I ran the NRT, thank you! I just really like zonealarm for it's simplicity and outbound protection (which windows firewall doesn't have). It's a shame I can't use it, hell, it's almost enough for me to find a different AV program.

Update: Bitdefender is offering me a free upgrade to their internet security suite. I think this just about covers it then. Thanks for the help tetonbob!
