NAV Auto Protect Help

Hi,
I start my computer and Windows98 tries to load and I get a big red box in the middle of my screen that says NAV Auto Protect is unable to detect the location of the configuration files. I have to press Enter to continue. Then I get my wallpaper on the screen but Windows will not load and I get no icons on the desktop. Up pops an Illegal Operation box that says Explorer caused a fault in Explorer.exe and then a bunch of numbers listed after that.
Has anyone got a fix for this as I don't have the Windows 98 disks to redo the computer. Thanks in advance to anyone that can help. If you need the exact numbers etc from the explorer box I can get them for you.
Thanks

I waited around, a bit, hoping that someone would have a solution for you, although I suspected that no one would.

TSF, and every other support forum that I know of, is flooded with requests for assistance with Norton products. It's hard for us to help, becasue we don't, generally, have Norton products on our machines. We have no conduit to information about the products and most repair attempts fail, anyway.

Why? Norton products are not reliable, not repairable and require too much memory. Their support is no support at all.

Dump Norton, altogether, and your life with your computer will be a much happier one. You probably paid good money, so you can use perfectly good, free programs, for a year, then either donate to the free services or find another retail product.

To help prevent future spyware installations/infections, please read the Anti-Spyware Section and use the tools provided.

I'm having problems with autoprotect too, but not the same problem. When you do finally get it going, I'm afraid there's a virus out there that targets autoprotect.

It will change the status from autoprotect ON to OFF without prompting from you. I contacted Symantec and they told me my IE6 was corrupted that I should reinstall. Already tongue in cheek after getting this nonsense answer, I did what they said but only got to the uninstall step. That left me by default to the prev version IE5. So I decided to use it for awhile before downloading IE6 again. Low and behold the same problem.

I wrote back tech support and complained about the clutzy service and suggested they create their own files so that only NA can, by decryption or signatures read their files, basic programming procedures for security programs.

JG is right, I'm dropping my NA 2005 and getting a better product.

I'm having the same exact problem with NAV Auto-protect as Corwins describes above. I'm stuck... can't reboot my laptop. Does anyone know of a way around this? Thanks much.

I think I had the similar experience too, such as some critical NAV file can't found or something. I agree with the opinion about virus/bad stuff. If I remember correctly how I fiexed it, you need to load a healty registry to set the sys up and do any kinds of scan.

Oh yes, start computer in DOS mode. You said yours is Win98, so under DOS,
1. cd \windows \command
2. scanreg /restore
3. select one of the backed-up registry, then enter

Hope it can help.

I was able to get a boot disk for win98 and then able to get to DOS. However, I can't move off the A:\ drive. When I do cd C:\ it just goes to the next line and displays A:\ > If I do dir C:\ the directory for drive C is displays fine. But I don't understand why I can't change directory to C:\ I'm not very good with DOS... am i missing something?

Try not to use boot disk. Start machine and press F8, select Command Prompt and I hope it will lead u to c:. (BTW, it's cd \windows\command, not cd \windows \command)
