I got hacked. What's next? Email change??
Hi all- new guy here. I hope I've posted this in the right spot.
About 10 days ago, someone sent a bulk email from my hotmail account. I changed my password and installed AVG and found 2 spyware files, which have been healed and deleted. Last night, I tried to buy something on ebay, and Paypal rejected the transaction, stating my credit card needed to be confirmed. I called paypal, and they informed me a freeze had been put on my account because on Feb. 25th an unauthorized party requested funds from my paypal. Paypal refunded the transaction, which had been done by someone using the company name Skype. I asked why I had not been informed of all this sooner, and the woman told me to check my hotmail's blocked sender list. Sure enough, paypal.com had been blocked. She said she's seen this before- someone hacks hotmail, then paypal, then blocks paypal.com in the email, so no paypal transactions or actions are noticed. I am partly to blame- my hotmail, paypal, and ebay were all the same simple password. So, I changed my hotmail password, and my paypal password, and security questions, and my ebay password- all different from each other now. I have been blocked by the WindowsLIVE of a few friends, and they can no longer get my emails, even though they remove me from the blocked list. All of this combined makes me want to scream! I want to change my email to my previously dormant gmail account, and eliminate hotmail alltogether. Do you guys think this is the wise move? If so, I've got a TON of info in hotmail that I need to relocate to gmail. Is there a simple way of doing this? I would guess it's upwards of 500 emails I'd need to move. Thanks for any advice, and please feel free to make suggestions aside from the steps I've taken thus far. Brandon |
