How do I stop remote access to emails

My sister has a husband that is a real piece of work... she asked me for my help although I am a finance guy.

Anyway, she has a laptop and so does her husband. However, he has done something to hers and he has some sort of program that he can see when she gets a personal email... and, he can read them. He also has the ability to down load and present her with any text message she has either sent or received on her cell phone.

Help me stop the madness.. is there any program out there that she can load to stop him?

Re: How do I stop remote access to emails

Yea.... she is my sister and asked for help. Is there a way? And, she suspects he has his IPod set up to detect this as well. He says it's "Public Information". I have heard of this being used in bars or other public areas to see if there is a network available, but he has gone into some of our friend's houses and hacking into their networks.

Re: How do I stop remote access to emails

Hi, welcome to TSF

Do you know if your sister is using a wireless network connection? If so, is she using WPA encryption?

What security software is installed? The husband might be using a keylogger or some other form of logging software that would be detected and removed by anti-malware programs.

Has she tried changing all her passwords for Windows, email, wireless, etc?

Is she running Windows as Admin or with a limited account?

I don't know about the cell phone text messages. Maybe he's set it up to automatically send copies to his own phone. Can she set up her phone with a password and check the message settings to see if carbon copies are being sent?

If he's hacking into other people's networks, get them to setup WPA encryption on their routers and install some security software.

Re: How do I stop remote access to emails

Well since its his wife and technically that computer is "theirs" I am pretty sure hes in the legal clear, you can do whatever you want to your own pc. In order to ever feel safe on that computer again it needs a format. and a format /mbr lol Always assume the worst in these kind of situations. Anyone who knows what hes doing will infect a machine with several things, having one to fall back on and one as a decoy. Have her change her online passwords from the newly installed windows because a keylogger is probably running. So yeah, you reinstall windows but that was the easy part right. Now you have to make sure everything is password protected and he NEVER has access to it EVER.. dont even add him on msn. you have to password the bios and disable boot from cd Password protect your windows account and make SURE that during the reinstall you password the ADMIN account also so as to not leave a gaping back door. Only have the computer run while its in use. She will have to worry about 2 types of attacks physical and network =/ he will obviously know her ip lol She will need wpa or wpa2 for her wireless connection and should be running a good firewall (comodo pro)
So thats it in a nutshell... of course there's alot more info that could be given but i am summarizing. Let me know if you would like more help on this we could do it through email.
